Full Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:This position is to join a dynamic and very busy research clinic in the Infectious Diseases Division of the University of Rochester. The site conducts research for multiple contracts with the NIH and pharmaceutical companies. Studies currently and future include COVID treatment research, monkeypox, antibacterial resistance, flu and ongoing HIV vaccine research. This position is responsible to provide clinical care including obtaining a history, performing a physical examination, evaluation of lab results, assessment and determination of eligibility for research studies. Provide HIV/STD prevention counseling and testing, enrollment of subjects and continued follow up in the research studies in collaboration with other research staff and faculty. This position will provide the lead oversight for the clinical operations of the clinical research site (CRS).

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform a health history, including sexual history and behavioral risk assessment
  • Targeted physical examination
  • Perform HIV pre-test and risk reduction counseling
  • Perform HIV post- test counseling
  • Assess clients’ suitability for active and upcoming research studies.
  • Perform venipuncture
  • Provide individualized patient education
  • Identifies other health problems and provides referrals to appropriate health providers for evaluation and management
  • Performs clinical audits for QA/QI

Provides clinical supervision of nurses:

  • For nursing assessments and procedures for laboratory specimen collection
  • For abnormal findings from nursing assessments
  • Participates in orientation and training of new clinic research nurses
  • Provides clinical supervision and training to research nurses and staff, this includes new protocols, procedures and in compliance with DAIDS and sponsor’s requirements.
  • Communicates issues relating to maintaining current medical and nursing standards of care within the CRS to the PI and Director.

Coordination of clinical case management:

  • Provides clinical consultation for the management of medical follow-up, and phone triage
  • Directs the management of abnormal laboratory test results. Assesses the need for further intervention. Assessment for AEs and SAEs Makes individual plans regarding extending follow up efforts

Professional development:

  • participates in training and education required by NYSPHL Article 28 regulations
  • fulfills requirements to maintain licensure physician assistant
  • Maintains certification as a Physician Assistant-including documentation of a minimum of 100 CEU hours/5 years for re-certification
  • Maintains appointment as a Clinical Associate of the School of Nursing, UR in order to act as a preceptor for physician assistant graduate students
  • Participates education sessions, including web-based training, attending conferences

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • NYS license as a Physician Assistant required
  • Experience not required, but a plus–working with Black/African American, Latino communities, men who have sex with other men, and transgender communities. Management or leadership experience, fluency in speaking/reading/writing Spanish preferred.
  • Strong clinical and phlebotomy skills. Effective problem solving, interpersonal communication skills and cultural competency. Able to function both independently and as part of a team. Able to take initiative, demonstrate resourcefulness, commitment to follow through and ensure high quality, timely completion of work preferred.
