Full Job Description
The Physician Assistant is responsible for providing quality care to patients while under the supervision of a licensed physician.
These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
- Practice medicine within the scope of license, training, and credentialing
- Practice medicine in accordance with the current standards of care
- Practice medicine in accordance with the quality criteria adopted by the Medical Staff Bylaws
- Promote a safety-conscious workplace
- Evaluate and follow up with patients
- Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served by demonstrating a strong working knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
- Communicate appropriately with the person served, regardless of age
- Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services
- Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
- 10 hour shift on work days (adjustment as needed based on patient care requirements)
- Rounding on all patients on list unless specifically directed otherwise in sign out / handoff
- Writing progress notes on all patients on list unless specifically directed otherwise in sign out / handoff
- Independently seeing consults if attending surgeon is otherwise occupied and writing consult note / History and Physical
- Writing orders during / after rounds or after seeing consult or admission
- Doing discharge summaries / medication reconciliation when appropriate
- Communicating with attending surgeon about any new consults or developments with floor patients during prolonged case in OR
- Communicating with floor nurses, hospitalists, consultants, ER providers, PT/OT as appropriate to facilitate patient care and disposition
- Helping ER disposition patients in a timely manner (admitting or deferring to medicine admission as appropriate) – if unsure, communicate with attending surgeon as soon as possible
- Performing procedures independently within scope of practice and after appropriate training / supervision period

Minimum Required Education: Graduation from an accredited Physician’s Assisting program with successful completion of the National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Preferred Experience: 2+ years as a Physician Assistant
Applicant must possess a current, unrestricted license to work as a Physician Assistant or in the state where work will be performed (ie. Commonwealth of Virginia or the State of North Carolina), a current DEA certification without restrictions, and a PALS and/or ACLS certification, as applicable.
