Full Job Description

The Division of Pain Management is seeking a Physician Assistant for a busy pain center at the University of Utah (UHealth).

In this position, you will provide longitudinal pain management care for a variety of patients including:
  • Patients with chronic non-cancer pain
  • Patients requiring intrathecal pump management
  • Cancer survivors (transfers from SOS team)
  • Patients requiring post-operative subacute pain consults
  • Patients receiving lidocaine/ketamine infusions
  • Patients requiring trigger point injections
Experience in caring for the patients listed above is optimal but training can be given.

This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Assess the physical condition of a group of patients by performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
  • Formulate the medical plan and prognosis based on patient’s condition.
  • Consult with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient’s clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Perform selected invasive procedures for therapeutic and/or diagnostic reasons within scope of validated competence.
  • Initiate and/or recommend medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.
  • Comply with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiate and maintain required records and legal documents.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Counsel patients, families and significant others about health and illness, and promote health maintenance.
  • Evaluate, plan, implement, and re-evaluate the care of individuals requiring emergency measures.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teaching, research and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.

Minimum Qualifications
Required:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:

  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
