Full Job Description
As a Graduate Physician Assistant Fellow, clinical experiences will be directly supervised by a Physician Assistant and Physician preceptor. Clinical experiences will include providing developmentally appropriate and age appropriate health maintenance for children, episodic care for ill children, and comprehensive care for children with chronic and acute conditions, including interdependent responsibilities in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of treatment and procedures. Through this fellowship, trainees will obtain a broad educational and clinical background in the care of the pediatric patient. Fellow will observe and practice alongside their Physician and Physician Assistant counterparts, rotating through subspecialty services and supporting services. Fellows will be involved in education, consultation, research, and evaluation of clinical practice at various levels. All duties are performed in a manner developmentally appropriate to the ages of patients served.
To qualify for the Surgery Physician Assistant Fellowship program, eligible candidates must have:
- Graduated from a PA Program prior to matriculation into the program
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, or be eligible to sit for the PANCE
- PA license from the Texas Board of Medicine preferable.
The Surgery Physician Assistant Fellowship Program at Texas Children’s Hospital is the first of its kind in the country to provide a specialized training opportunity specifically for physician assistants. This intensive12-month didactic and clinical pediatric training program ensures a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a full spectrum of pediatric surgical subspecialties, including congenital heart surgery, general pediatric surgery, hand/microsurgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, surgical hospitalists, transplant, trauma, and urology.
The one-year program includes clinical pediatric surgical subspecialty experience, dedicated research time, and specialty workshops to include suture, cadaver and simulation labs. Training will be provided in clinics, on the surgical floors and in the operating room and will involve pre-, intra- and post-operative care.
This fellowship program is suitable for both new PA program graduates as well as experienced physician assistants who would like to plan and/or redirect their future career in a surgical subspecialty.
