Physician Assistant – GI

Job Summary: Works in concert and under the supervision of Salem Gastro physicians to ensure the highest quality of care for the patient. Physicians may delegate to the physician assistant those medical duties that are within the physician assistant’s scope of practice, the physician assistant’s training, and that are allowed by federal and state law.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent per time period) from an accredited physician assistant program is required
- National certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required
- Active Oregon physician assistant license; in good standing is required
- ACLS certification is preferred
- GI experience is preferred but not required

Essential Job Duties:
– Assess patient health by interviewing patient, perform physical examinations, obtain, update, and study the medical history
– Issue orders for medications, treatments, diagnostic tests, procedures, and/or referrals
– Code visit accurately and timely
– Perform patient history and physical
– Establish medical diagnoses
– Order and interpret diagnostic tests
– Provide health education and counseling to patient and family
– Document information accurately and promptly
– Maintain desktop in EMR
– Answer flag, phone notes, and other documents from staff and other providers timely
– Recognize situations which require the immediate attention of a physician and initiate lifesaving procedures when necessary
– Comply with federal and state legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising Administration on needed actions
– Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational conferences; reviewing professional publications; participating in professional societies
– Act as a resource for other members of the health care team, share knowledge and expertise with staff through discussion
– Work cooperatively with the physician on call to:
– Evaluate and treat patients in the emergency room on the inpatient setting
– Conduct patient rounds
– Evaluate changes in the patient’s condition
– Write discharge summaries
– Consult with hospitalists, surgeons, and other hospital personnel as needed
– Help manage the hospital patient list
– Initiate and implement an individualized medical plan of care in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other appropriate health care professionals
– Initiate necessary diagnostic, therapeutic, and medical actions in compliance with approved protocols and in conjunction with the physician on call
– Provide follow-up care, including acute and routine examinations, based on the chief complaint
– Assess progress, identify problems, initiate preventative measures, recognize emergent issues, and initiate proper care while maintaining contact with the physician on call
– Prescribe and regulate medication per physician consultation or protocols
– Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory findings and the pathology involved
– Document and maintain clinical activities in the respective patient’s chart
– Work collaboratively to affect programmatic change and develop protocols
– Identify goals for the patient and communicate them to others involved in the patient’s care
– Utilize supplies, equipment, and resources to contain cost without compromising the delivery of care
– Document information accurately and promptly
– Seek guidance, directions, and assistance where needed
Working Conditions:
– Varied activities include but are not limited to, walking, standing, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, lifting
– Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time
– Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye coordination
– Ability to use an array of office equipment including, but not limited to a computer, copier, multi-line telephone, etc
– Ability to use standard medical equipment and supplies including but not limited to a stretcher, cardiac monitor, thermometer, oximeter, blood pressure machine/manual, blood glucose monitor, wall suction and intravenous supplies
– May on occasion require light lifting of no greater than 50 pounds
– Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
– Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours at times
- May have exposure to patients with infectious diseases
Pay: $112,000.00 – $134,000.00 per year
