Full Job Description

The Advanced Practice Provider role within UNLV Health provides Trauma and specialty healthcare services under the direction of a physician in hospital/clinic setting. Services provided by the advanced practice provider can include evaluating adults and children, ordering laboratory and radiologic tests, prescribing medication and managing health and injury conditions. The position requires the ability to work closely with physicians, clinicians, learners, and other health care practitioners in a team based approach to patient care. Pay range for this position is up to $150,000, depending on years of experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide patient care in primarily a hospital setting.
  • Provide clinical services as assigned.
  • Assess patient status by obtaining health history through patient/family interviews and chart reviews; assessing/presenting injuries/illnesses, risk factors, family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; performing appropriate physical examination; and full assessment following injury.
  • Communicates appropriate case management/social services information to other professionals and other healthcare facilities.
  • Orders/performs appropriate laboratory, radiologic diagnostic and other screening tests. Seeks other information as needed, including consultation with physicians and other clinicians, for evaluation of injury/illness.
  • Integrates data to determine diagnoses and therapeutic plan, including identification of any health risks and relevant social determinants of health.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans by prescribing medications and other therapeutic services in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.
  • Performs assigned procedures, including repair of lacerations, chest tubes, etc.
  • Instructs patient/family regarding medications and treatments. Educates patients regarding health promotion and injury/illness prevention. Recommends appropriate community resources to meet patient/family needs.
  • Prepares documentation for medical records including updating patient medical charts by documenting examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written/computerized manner.
  • Participates in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Acts as consultant/collaborator as a member of the clinical team on area of specialty. Complies with patient confidentiality requirements. Promotes patient advocacy.
  • Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term needs of patients. Provides monitoring and continuity of care according to treatment plan including triaging patient calls/emails.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • May provides services in conjunction with other sub-specialty services.
  • May assist in operating room or procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • MSN Required.
  • Must have a current and unrestricted NP license.
  • Must be certified through a national certifying body.
  • Must hold a Certificate of completion from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Must have or be eligible to have a Nevada Pharmacy and DEA License.
  • Current ACLS, ATLS, ABLS, and PALS (additional certification may be required based on specialty).
  • Must maintain privileges at UNLV Health and University Medical Center (UMC).
  • Must maintain all required certifications or licensures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum five years of professional nursing experience in a hospital setting, plus two years of nurse practitioner experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Burn and/or Wound Care experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of health promotion, health risk identification, and patient education principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of community, professional, and educational resources.
  • Knowledge of practice management systems including electronic health record systems (EHRs).
  • Ability to competently use Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and appropriate practice management software.
  • Skill in priority and time management, problem solving, crisis intervention, multitasking, and other organizational matters.
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, clinicians, and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • May include standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods.
  • May include performing repetitive tasks.
  • May include working on a special schedule (i.e. evenings and weekends).
  • May include working with challenging patients.
  • May include lifting up to 25 pounds.
