The Physician Assistant II position for the Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Consult Service is a position working with cardiac surgeons, internal medical staff, and consulting teams within MGB and across referring practices.


Job Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. Under general supervision and direction of the Cardiac Surgeons, and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing PA practice, the PA will be responsible for the care of patients on the Cardiac Surgical Service, primarily patients that are admitted to the Cardiac Surgery Service and those consulted to the Cardiac Surgery Service. The PA will participate in daily rounds with nurses, other Advanced Practice staff, residents, surgeons, and multidisciplinary caregivers as needed. The PA is able to perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; participate in the development and implementation of care plans; coordinate tests and consultations; implement treatment plans; communicate with referring physicians; perform patient education; and prepare patients for surgery, perioperative medical course, and discharge, updating Surgeons as required. Maintains open lines of communication between Cardiac Surgeons, Residents, Fellows, PAs, Nursing Staff, Cardiologists, MCS/transplant coordinators, and patients/families. Promotes a collaborative relationship between the medical staff and nurses toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. May have additional duties, such as precepting a small number of learners.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices and procedures for cardiothoracic patients.
  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
