Other conditions: To begin July 1, 2026, subject to position clearance. Non-tenure track; 11-month appointment period; annually renewable depending on performance and/or funding availability. Funding sources for this position may also include tuition and extramural funding. Position may serve as the Designated Institutional Official, dependent upon dean approval, and continuation is contingent upon satisfactory performance.
Duties and Responsibilities for Associate Professor:
- Engage in the education and training of current and future neighbor island-based faculty members in JABSOM clinical departments.
- Work with JABSOM GME Program Directors and faculty members to develop innovative rural training models, including distributed training sites and community-based rotations.
- Focus on GME growth and expansion on neighbor islands, including development of new rotations, tracks, or programs aligned with institutional mission, workforce needs, and partner capacity.
- Partner with clinics, hospitals, and community stakeholders to create sustainable training models and physician pipelines tailored to rural health priorities.
- Collaborate with leaders in the medical student curriculum to further develop competency-based medical education along the continuum.
- Serve on and participate in University, JABSOM, and health system committees.
- Perform scholarly work or research.
- Perform related work as assigned.
Duties for the Full Professor Level:
In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank:
- Assume the role of professional leadership within the school and medical profession.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate Professor:
- MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
- Four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates not applying from the Assistant Professor rank should have seven (7) years or more of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship institution.
- Eligible for unrestricted Hawai’i Medical License at time of hire.
- ABMS Board certification and Maintenance of Board Certification.
- Evidence of effective medical education activities, scholarly/research activity, educational or clinical administration is required.
- Scholarly or administrative activities may address health, patient care, or the methods and techniques of medical education.
- Evidence of the generation of new knowledge in clinical care, care processes, or medical education is critical to improving the quality and effectiveness of a medical school’s primary teaching function.
- Timely publication of results in peer-reviewed venues (i.e., journals, online collaboratives/portals, local or national conferences) that include at least co-authorship of publications together with sufficient independent or group research/scholarship activity to justify the reasonable expectation that the applicant will develop into an effective and productive scholar.
- Demonstrated medical education administrative activities that involve curriculum development and oversight, involved with the development of coursework for medical students and/or residents/fellows.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience serving in prior GME or Department leadership roles such as Program Director, Associate Program Director.
- Experience in developing administrative partnerships and relationships between GME programs/clinical departments and/or medical education institutions, including health systems or hospitals.
- Advanced study in medical education.
For the Full Professor Level:
- In addition to those required for the Associate level:
- Four (4) years at the rank of Associate Professor. Candidates not applying from the Associate Professor rank should have ten (10) years or more of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship institution.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience in developing administrative or educational synergies between divisions or programs within a clinical department.
- Experience serving in prior GME or Department leadership roles such as Program Director, Associate Program Director.
- Experience in developing administrative partnerships and relationships between GME programs/clinical departments and/or medical education institutions, including health systems or hospitals.
- Advanced study in medical education.
