In the clinic, the PA evaluates new and established patients, conducts preoperative and postoperative visits, reviews diagnostic imaging and test results, develops treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising physician and eventually on your own, provides patient education, and completes accurate and timely documentation. The position requires flexibility, sound clinical judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced neurosurgical practice.

Duties

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments including physical examinations, vital signs, and neurological evaluations to determine appropriate care plans.
  • Assist neurosurgeons during surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, managing instrumentation, and ensuring aseptic techniques are maintained.
  • Administer injections such as Botulinum toxin treatments for neurological conditions and manage acute pain with evidence-based interventions.
  • Perform diagnostic evaluations utilizing EMR/EHR systems, interpret imaging results, and coordinate further testing like radiology or laboratory studies.
  • Manage inpatient and outpatient care including triage, and critical care for trauma or neurological emergencies.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals across disciplines to develop comprehensive discharge plans, coordinate post-acute care, and participate in clinical research or trials.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintain accurate medical records using electronic health record (EHR) systems like Epic or Cerner.

Skills

  • Extensive experience with EMR systems for documentation and data management.
  • Proficiency in performing suturing, injection administration, and physical examinations with aseptic technique.
  • Strong knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology, diagnostic test interpretation (including ICD-10/ICD-9 coding), and medical terminology relevant to neurosurgery.
  • Critical care experience in ICU or Level I/II trauma centers with skills in airway management, ventilator use, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to conduct clinical research, collect data accurately, and contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with CPT coding for procedures performed in surgical or outpatient settings; understanding of drug enforcement regulations (DEA) for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Experience working within hospital medicine environments including neurocritical units or neurosurgical wards; knowledge of hospital protocols for infectious disease care and infection control measures.
  • Excellent client communication skills with the ability to educate patients about treatment options such as pain management or palliative care; adept at discharge planning and health coaching.
