WORK SCHEDULE:
- Monday – Friday 40hrs/week
- May require nights or weekends
- Home-call may be required in proportion

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The scope of privileges for an Orthopedic PA includes the outpatient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and consultation for patients of all ages to correct or treat various conditions, illnesses, and injuries of the extremities, spine, and associated structures by medical and physical means. The Orthopedic PA provides medical services within the scope of practice of the collaborating Orthopedic Surgeon. Orthopedic PAs also provide perioperative care in conjunction with the treating surgeon. Orthopedic PAs may assess, stabilize, and determine the disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy.
- Works under general supervision of the Chief, Orthopedic Clinic who discusses policies and objectives. There is no direct supervision, and the individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients.
- Will have an Orthopedic Surgeon identified in writing who will provide consultation, clinical feedback, and general oversight of the Orthopedic PA’s practice.
- If hospital admission for an orthopedic procedure, the incumbent acts solely under the direction of an orthopedic surgeon, can admit and perform inpatient rounds for the orthopedic surgeon.
- Participates in established peer (other medical specialist) review process monthly. Provides chart review for quality assurance purposes in the area of neurology if requested on an occasional basis.
- Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to his/her assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.
- Provide primary or specialty medical care with the cognizance or supervision of a physician. Attend any in-service training on current Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Provides services by collecting data required for diagnosis and performing procedures and services.
- Obtains and evaluates medical histories, performs physical examinations, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and orders laboratory studies, radiographs, electrocardiograms, and other special examinations.
- Collects specimens for pathologic examination. Analyzes and interprets data, formulates problem lists, and establishes plans for solution of clinical problems.
- Counsel’s patients on medical problems, use of drugs, expected effects of treatment, family planning, child care, diet, and other therapeutic health maintenance matters.
- Makes entries in patient’s permanent medical records.
- In emergency situations, administers lifesaving procedures and medications pending availability of physician.
- Procedures include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, treatment of life endangering traumatic injuries, defibrillation, insertion of endotracheal tubes, and administration of whole blood, oxygen, and other emergency medications.
- Coordinates patient care with other members of health care team.
- Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management.
- Accomplishes narrative summaries and other documentation.
- Instructs other personnel assigned to health care team on preventive medicine programs and other appropriate medical activities and functions as directed.
- Assists the orthopedic surgeons in the operating room. The PA will perform nonoperative management of various fractures. The PA must be proficient with orthopedic casting and injections.
- Under the direction of the MTF, the PA may perform duties at UC Health and Centura Health Care System hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers..
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Successfully completed a Physician Assistant Education Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission for Physical Education, Inc (ARC-PA)
- Post-Graduate Training: Successfully completed an accredited Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant residency or fellowship program that is at least 12 months in length.
- National Certification: Maintains an active, current, valid, unrestricted NCCPA certification.
- Licensure: Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid and unrestricted license from a US jurisdiction (fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands) to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty.
- Experience/Clinical Competency: Have actively practiced as an Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant or in training for 24 months within the last 36 months, and are able to demonstrate clinical and surgical first assistant competency. Clinical competency is verifiable by clinical and surgical activity logs submitted by the previous medical institutions.
- Must be able to safely execute the responsibilities of their specialty in providing health care. Has no medical or mental condition that prevents or that significantly reduces an individual’s ability to safely execute their approved scope of practice in providing health care. This includes alcohol or drug abuse, or mental health disorder not responsive to treatment.
- Must possess and maintains current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support. If applicable, maintains current Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
- Professional Behavior/Conduct: Must not have any reported allegations of misconduct to external regulatory agencies where there is reasonable cause (such as an arrest) that could have a serious impact on patient/staff welfare or safety.
