A Brief Overview Will function as a member of the cardiothoracic team to provide appropriate medical care to cardiothoracic patients; to provide surgical assistance to the surgeon; and to work with hospital staff members, outside physicians and patient families. Essential Functions

  • Assist the surgeon in the operating room, first and second assist-at-surgery; perform surgical procedures as directed by the surgeon. Responsible to take after-hours call on a rotation basis with other cardiothoracic Surgery PA. Perform complete physical examinations and review the patient’s past medical record. Obtain a patient medical history, patient profile, chief complaint, social history and a review of body systems. • Participates in patient rounds, initiate patient orders within the PA Scope of Practice. • Perform and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as delegated by supervising physician utilizing appropriate aseptic and isolation techniques. • See outpatients acutely and in follow-up, make preliminary diagnosis, formulate treatment plans, provide follow-up care, and write prescriptions according to the State of Nebraska statutes. • Prepare patient summaries, progress notes and discharge summaries. • Work with families to provide information and education regarding medical condition. Refer to and coordinate with agencies for follow-up services. • Assist in and/or conduct clinical or laboratory research projects including collecting, organization, or interpreting data. • Solid organ procurement
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

Education Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the Physician Assistant program Required

Experience Qualifications

  • Previous clinical experience in pediatrics Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Satisfy all relevant criteria and qualifications outlined in the Medical Staff Policy on Allied Health Professional, required to be credentialed.
  • Practice within framework of respective scope of practice.

Licenses and Certifications

  • PA – Physician Assistant Upon Hire Required and
  • PA-C – Physician Assistant certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Upon Hire Required and
  • BLS – Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Upon Hire Required and
  • PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 180 Days Required and
  • ACLS within 180 Days Required and
  • DEA License within 30 Days Required
