Physician Assistant Resident
Orthopedics offers a varied and rewarding career for physician assistants, with opportunities in multiple surgical subspecialties.
As national leaders in the treatment of hip, shoulder and knee, the American Hip Institute offers a 12-month residency designed to help PAs develop the knowledge and skills to make an immediate impact on their postgraduate practice. Successful candidates in the program may be offered a fulltime permanent position upon completion of residency year.
The program is specifically designed to provide new grads with the latest clinical and surgical skill education. Residents will have high-volume first assist OR training, direct clinical care competency, first-call responsibility, and multidisciplinary communication training, all aimed at providing a firm, baseline education platform as a physician assistant in orthopedics. The American Hip Institute specializes in minimally invasive arthroscopic hip, knee, shoulder and elbow preservation, outpatient robotic-arm assisted total hip and knee replacement, Birmingham hip resurfacing, cell & regenerative medicine. In addition to these core procedures, residents will be exposed to all aspects of sports medicine of the hip, shoulder and knee as it relates to orthopedic sports medicine.
We consider applicants who have:
- Graduated from an accredited master’s-level physician assistant program
- Passed or are eligible to take the NCCPA certification examination
- Earned BLS and ACLS certification
Mission and goals
Our mission is to provide PA residents with the clinical and surgical skills necessary to ethically practice in either an academic or community setting at the highest possible level of competence.
The goals of the residency are for residents to master the fundamentals of clinical science as applied to orthopedics, including but not limited to:
- Suturing
- OR first assist
- Thorough clinical patient evaluation and work-up
- Pre-operative optimization & education
- Post-operative recovery, short and long-term
- Surgical anatomy
- Surgical pathology
- Wound healing and management

Residency program salary: $90,000 annual salary with full benefits during residency year. Upon successful completion of program, resident may be offered full time permanent position at market rates.
