APP (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) – Gamma Knife Center

Harborview Medical Center has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (ARNP or PA-C) in our Gamma Knife Center. This position will collaborate with The Department of Radiation Oncology faculty providers for treatment and care of oncology and radiosurgical patients.

The APP is a certified physician assistant or advanced registered nurse practitioner who provides evaluation and medical management for patients at Harborview Medical Center. They will follow patients before and after their procedures, including providing moderate sedation during the procedure, medical supportive care, post-procedural care, as well as long-term surveillance. The ARNP/PA-C will also be involved in the evaluation of patients for other forms of radiation treatment as medically appropriate and work collaboratively with the team members from various specialties to coordinate care of their patients. All clinical responsibilities are performed within the scope of practice, institutional privileges, and under the supervision of an attending physician.

The ARNP/PA-C functions within their scope of practice and collaborate effectively with other disciplines to provide state-of-the-art patient and family-centered care. We are looking for applicants who:

  • practice evidence-based diagnosis and management of the acute, symptomatic, and palliative care needs of patients with cancer and other CNS diseases.
  • effectively communicate information about disease processes, treatments, and management of treatment toxicities to patients and family caregivers.
  • Scope of Work

  • Performs complex and problem-focused H & P’s for consideration of Gamma Knife radiosurgery or other forms of treatment as medically appropriate.
  • Provides supportive care during the procedure with moderate sedation as medically appropriate.
  • Understands the biology and natural history of common cancers.
  • Provides patient education about the natural history and available treatments for a variety of CNS disorders.
  • Understands the biology and natural history of more benign tumors and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).
  • Evaluates and manages on-treatment and post-treatment side effects, as well as long-term surveillance and survivorship issues.
  • Performs procedures according to licensure, credentialing, and scope of practice.
  • Collaborates and consults with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and timely treatment as well as continuity of care.
  • Participates in the conduct of cancer clinical research.
  • Communicates changes in patient’s health status to the patient’s primary team.
  • Participates in patient rounds, conferences, and committees.
  • Actively participates in the development and maintenance of patient management algorithms and standing orders.
  • Documents patient care data in accordance with the UWP policies.
  • Evaluates the physical and psychological state of the cancer patient. Provides support to patients by participating in patient and/or family teaching, counseling and rehabilitation as well as referring patients to community agencies to promote optimal adjustment and functioning.
  • Teaches and mentors new ARNP or PA-C staff & PA and/or NP students and Medical and Physics Residents.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned.
  • REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current valid Washington State license as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C).
  • If ARNP, current Washington State license to practice as a registered nurse.
  • Graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
  • Nationally certified ARNP/PA-C.
  • Active DEA license.
  • Experience working with high-risk patients
  • One or more years’ experience working with complex patients.
  • One or more years’ history of effectiveness in working in an interdisciplinary, collaborative team environment as proven through supervisory references.
  • Training and/or experience in the provision of outpatient care including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and management of patients.
  • Applicant must be eligible to receive hospital staff appointments for adjunct staff membership by the Organized Medial Staff of the hospital under Medical Staff By-Laws for hospital-based positions.
