Definition
Under direction of the Chief Medical Officer provides medical services to patients of HealthWorks for Northern Virginia. Physician Assistant is a core member of a collaborative care team that may involve the patient?s primary care provider, nursing staff, and other care providers and/or clinical staff.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Promotes the mission, vision, and values of HealthWorks.
- As part of the HealthWorks team, assists in both the planning and implementation of Healthworks? health care plan for patients.
- Assumes quality of care for all patients. Provides appropriate, efficient, and effective clinical medical care required in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease and injury.
- Evaluates situations, which call for emergency medical procedures or require physician intervention.
- Evaluates and treats acute injuries, including injections, subcutaneous local anesthesia, apply and remove splints for severe sprains and fractures, suture superficial wounds, remove sutures and treat/dress wounds.
- Responsible for diagnosis and treatment of conditions within the scope of practice. Reviews and updates the health record using EMR.
- Evaluates patients including obtaining medical history and physical exam. Orders and interprets appropriate lab and x-ray data. Within standard care guidelines, diagnoses patient conditions, prescribes medications, orders tests, discriminates between normal and abnormal finding and provides treatment and therapy.
- Initiates appropriate referrals to other health care providers. Seeks supervision from Center physicians when care or conditions are beyond scope of practice or knowledge base.
- Obtains appropriate consults from specialists when needed.
- Clearly documents all patient visits and billing as soon as possible or within 24 hours following that encounter. All entries in the patient medical record are to be entered into the EMR using the SOAP format.
- Provides high quality customer service to patients with a high emphasis on customer satisfaction reports.
- Shows effort to maintain patient flow and efficiency which directly impacts patient and staff satisfaction.
- Practices fiscally responsible medicine to help sustain the financial stability of the health center. This includes using laboratory formulary, a stepwise approach to diagnostic testing, and using generic medications when medically appropriate, etc.
- Works with facility staff and medical staff through the processes of quality improvement, peer evaluation, professional and staff meetings, and federal and state rules and regulations to ensure quality clinical standards are maintained at the facility.
- Provides adequate and timely patient medical records to facilitate appropriate continuity of care, confidentiality of client information, and compliance with medical reporting standards; and to facilitate accurate and timely billing of services.
- Adheres to the highest standards of medical practice, ethics, and professionalism at all times.
- Adheres to quality assessment guidelines, CLIA, OSHA or other regulations as federally mandated or as set forth by standards of practice of HealthWorks.
- Maintains the office hours of the center and abides by HealthWorks policies and procedures.
- Participates in provider staff, clinical staff, and general staff meetings.
- Shares in responsibility of the teaching and training of Health Science students and other health care professionals.
- Maintains certifications which strengthen ability to provide quality care (i.e. BLS, etc.)
- Accepts clinical responsibilities/duties assigned or requested by the Chief Medical Officer.
- Maintains an affiliation with professional groups, medical associations, and medical organizations, per policies and as requested by CMO.
- Participates in marketing self and HealthWorks to the community as a way of attracting new patients to the practice.
- Receive and respond promptly to calls and electronic notices from health center staff.
- Sharing ?on-call? duties on a rotating basis with the other providers employed or contracted with HealthWorks.
- Documentation of applicable patient data in the EMR, to capture and report accurate health center prenatal care outcomes.
- Ensure protection of confidential health information of health center patients.
- Abide by HealthWorks? Code of Ethics, Standards of Behavior, and other policies.
