Busy Nephrology group has an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated Physician Assistant to join our Tyler, Texas practice. Renal experience is highly desirable, but willing to train the right candidate. Requires traveling to dialysis units located in the East Texas area. The qualified candidate must be a team player and self-starter with the ability to handle a busy patient load. We offer a comprehensive compensation package.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Periodic rounds on dialysis patients in an outpatient setting.
  • Prescribe and adjust medications for blood pressure, bone disease including Vitamin D, anticoagulants, heparin, Activase, ESA’s, iron and other dialysis related medications.
  • Adjust and prescribe non-dialysis related medications as indicated. Prescriptions will comply with all applicable state and federal laws.
  • Will abide by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy requirements to check the patient’s PMP history before dispensing or prescribing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol per House Bill 3284.
  • Comprehensive access assessment and management.
  • Assessment of adequacy of dialysis including Kt/V, URR, PCR – calculate and analyze for adequacy.
  • Assess and set dialysis parameters including target weight and dialysis prescription.
  • Routine and periodic physical examination and medical history.
  • Address patient medical complaints and problems for intervention, nephrology assessment or referral as needed.
  • Provide teaching and education of patients for ESRD in modality of therapy selection, including transplantation, evaluate patient and family social environmental and home care needs.
  • Order labs and diagnostic tests, review results and initiate an appropriate plan of intervention.
  • Provide for pre-ESRD care, education and transition to ESRD modalities.
  • Initiate involvement of social services, dietitian, occupational and physical rehabilitation.
  • Refer for consultation to other specialties as medically indicated.
  • Perform, order or refer for preventive medicine screening evaluation and intervention; such as, occult blood determination, periodic flexible sigmoidoscopy, breast examination, mammography, pap smear, prostate examination, immunizations, cancer screening, lipid screening, exercise and smoking cessation.
  • Responsible for diagnosing and addressing diverse medical problems including diseases of various systems such as cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal, skin, bone and endocrine disorders within the scope and capability of the practitioner.
  • Address general medical problems within the scope of practice to allow attending Nephrologist to provide more complex responsibilities.
  • Document chart notes on all patient activities provided by the practitioner.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of dialysis complications such as hypotension, hypertension, nausea, vomiting, headaches, arrhythmias, chest pain, cardio-pulmonary arrest, seizures, hemolysis, embolism and cramps.
  • Address potential infections and septicemia with appropriate initiation of therapy.
  • Participate in care conferences and coordination of care between physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, patients and families when determined by medical directors to be helpful and appropriate.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervising physician and/or management.

  • Ability to competently operate standard office equipment.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, programs and applications including medical software and electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of government regulations and legal requirements related to healthcare (HIPAA/OSHA).
  • Maintain required continuing education hours (CME) for licensing.

Education: Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPA) or a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (MS-PA) degree. NCCPA Board Certified. Proof of BLS Certification required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of work experience in a medical office or clinic setting is preferred. Practical experience and/or training in the areas of Nephrology, kidney transplant and clinical practices preferred. Bilingual in English/Spanish is desirable but not required.

Work Environment: Combination of office, exam and other clinical settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions that are common to a clinic setting. Position is in a well-lit office environment, requires working under stressful conditions and occasional irregular hours including evening and weekend work. A standard work day is 8:00am to 5:00pm, but exceptions may apply.

Equipment Operated: Standard medical equipment and office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, paging system, etc.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Work may include sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and stretching. Occasionally, one may lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds. Must be able to use proper techniques in body mechanics when making necessary patient transfers and while helping patients walk, dress, etc. Frequent stress due to the level of responsibilities. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Manual/finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination required. Pay: From $105,000.00 per year
