Summary

CHRISTUS Children’s, a world-class 240-bed freestanding children’s hospital in San Antonio, serves as a focal point for pediatric services throughout the community. In 2013, CHRISTUS Health finalized an agreement partnering with Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) to recruit, employ, and oversee physicians and advanced practice providers at CHRISTUS Children’s.

Baylor College of Medicine (www.bcm.edu) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier academic health science centers and is known for excellence in education, research, healthcare, and community service. BCM is currently associated with multiple educational, healthcare, and research affiliates.

The Division of General Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine – Christus Children’s San Antonio seeks a full-time Advance Practice Provider. The Physician Assistant works under a delineation of clinical privileges and works collaboratively with other members of the health care team, including the attending physicians, resident physicians, and fellow physicians to provide comprehensive patient care. Working in a high volume and patient-oriented clinic, this position will be responsible for the management of patients with pediatric acute and general surgical conditions under the direct supervision of pediatric Baylor College of Medicine general surgeons. Job Duties

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrate appropriate critical thinking, ability to prioritize task completion and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to collaborate with other specialists and team members
  • Demonstrate strong physical assessment and diagnostic skills particularly in the areas of neurological, musculoskeletal, and development
  • Demonstrate experience in patient and family education and coordination of care.
  • Have a background or be willing to learn to work with children with chronic illness and impairment
  • Demonstrate an interest in developing and improving care delivery for patients with disabilities
