Full Job Description

We are searching for a Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant — someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. The nurse practitioner or physician assistant works under a delineation of clinical privileges and works collaboratively with other members of the health care team. Practicing under established guidelines and clinical protocols, the NP or PA assumes independent and interdependent responsibilities in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of treatment and procedures. Job duties are performed in a manner that is developmentally appropriate for the ages of the patients served. As an advanced practice provider, the NP or PA is responsible for education, research, consultation and evaluation of the clinical practice at various levels.

This position in all inpatient and hours are 6a-5p and 5p-6a. Providers work an average of 3 shifts per week and rotate day and night shifts with the APP team.

Qualifications:

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Required master’s degree Nursing (MSN) is required for new hires effective 03/01/17 or after for employees hired with Texas Children’s before 03/01/17, an MSN is required for NPs licensed 01/01/03 or after. For employees hired with Texas Children’s before 03/01/17, either an MSN or a certificate program is required for NPs licensed prior to 01/01/03
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: RN – Lic-Registered Nurses by the Texas Board of Nursing or Nursing Licensure Compact. FNP – Cert-Family Nurse Practitioner by the Texas Board of Nursing OR NNP – Neonatal Nurse Practitioner by the Texas Board of Nursing OR PNP-BC – Cert-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner by the Texas Board of Nursing OR WHNP-BC – Cert-Womens Health Care NP by the Texas Board of Nursing OR CPNP-AC – Cert-Pediatric NP Acute Care by the Texas Board of Nursing OR AG-ACNP – Adult Geron Acute Care NP by the Texas Board of Nursing OR PMHNP-BC – Cert-Fam Psych/NP PMHNP-BC by the Texas Board of Nursing
  • Adult Gerontology Acute NP Certification strongly preferred for this position.
  • Experience in Congenital Heart Disease, Cardiology or CVICU is strongly preferred.

Physician Assistant:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • PA – Cert-Physician Assistant by the Texas Medical Board
  • Experience in Congenital Heart Disease, Cardiology or CVICU is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Daily uses advanced practice knowledge and skills to systematically collect and evaluate health assessment data and manage patients’ caseload. Obtains a comprehensive health, developmental, and family history on patients as documented in the patient’s medical record.
  • Assess the patient’s physical status through the physical examination as documented in the patient’s medical record.
  • Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings as documented in the patient’s medical record.
  • Performs or recommends age-appropriate health screening procedures as documented in the patient’s medical record.
  • Provides health maintenance and health promotion for children of all ages as documented in the patient’s medical record.
  • Performs and evaluates diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests as documented in the patient’s medical record.
  • Analyzes multiple sources of data and formulates a differential diagnosis in collaboration with physicians as demonstrated in the written documentation.
  • Follows established delegation protocols to manage specific patient problems. Formulates a plan of care in collaboration with other health care professionals and documents the plan in the patient’s medical record.
  • Accurately evaluates patient’s responses to interventions and modifies the plan of care demonstrated by written documentation.
  • Accurately presents and documents the data, impression, and plan of care on all patients as demonstrated in the written documentation.
  • Consistently demonstrates effective communication skills and works to eliminate communication barriers.
  • Collaborates effectively with other members of the health care disciplines to provide comprehensive care to patients.
  • Utilizes effective and appropriate interviewing skills to elicit information from patients and/or family and collaborates with them in developing the care plan.
  • Requests consultation and/or initiates referral for specialized care as appropriate. Communicates with health care team members the comprehensive assessment, impression, and plan of care.
  • Consistently serves as an educational resource for the patient and family, community, and other health care professionals.
  • Consistently applies new knowledge relevant to pediatric nursing to clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates current professional, managerial, and/or technical knowledge and skills. Maintains knowledge base by reading professional literature, attending staff development, and continuing education programs annually. Participates in department and hospital committees, which promote quality nursing, care as assigned.
  • Demonstrates NP role behaviors consistent with the development of advanced nursing practice.
  • Participates in departmental Quality Improvement program annually.

Physician Assistant:

  • Provide medical services that are within the education and training of the Physician Assistant within the scope of practice and delegation of the supervising physician
  • Obtain a comprehensive health, developmental, and family history on patients and documents appropriately in the patient’s medical record
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal findings and documents appropriately in the patient’s medical record
  • Prescribe or administer medications as delegated by the supervising physician and documents in medical records
  • Administer appropriate vaccines as observed by physicians and documented in medical records
  • Order diagnostic tests consistent with differential diagnoses derived from gathered data as evidenced by types of tests ordered
  • Foster collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to improve health care
  • Establish a relationship with the patient/family characterized by mutual respect, empathy, and collaboration
