Summary
The nurse practitioner (NP) will practice in an advanced role within a clinic and perioperative setting, providing Anesthesiology and Pre-Anesthesia Care services to patients. The NP will work under a delineation of clinical privileges and in collaboration with other members of the health care team (attending physician, residents, CRNA, clinic nursing staff).
Operating under established guidelines and clinical protocols, the NP assumes both independent and interdependent responsibilities in the evaluation, assessment, and optimization of pre-anesthesia patients in a clinic setting. Additionally, the NP will provide support for the Acute Pain Management Service (APMS) as needed. This position will also serve as a back-up to the on-site Ben Taub NP assigned to the APM Service.
Job Purpose
Provide advanced nursing care to patients in a clinic under a physician’s direction.
Job Duties
- Perform a comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluation for in-person and tele-health surgical patients.
- Obtain a detailed history from patients, including a full review of systems, with special emphasis on cardiopulmonary status.
- Perform and document a focused physical examination, including a complete airway exam.
- Perform medication reconciliation and provide perioperative patient education and instructions based on established protocols.
- Order, interpret, and manage appropriate diagnostic labs in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
- Ensure that patients are optimized for anesthesia, including ordering additional testing, and obtaining appropriate consultations when appropriate. Follow up these work-ups and consults to risk-stratify patients for surgery.
- Formulate an appropriate anesthetic plan for patients based on evaluation and discussion with supervising physicians.
- Discuss and obtain informed consent for anesthesia from patients.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including a thorough preoperative evaluation note.
- Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
- Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
- Serve as a back-up Nurse Practitioner for Ben Taub on-site acute pain management service.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- For Nurse Practitioner: Master’s degree in in Nursing.
- For Physician Assistant: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
Certification/Licenses/Registration:
- For Nurse Practitioner: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department.
- For Physician Assistant: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification is required by the department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
