Full Job Description
Position: Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner – Neurosurgery (Skull Base, Neuro-Oncology and pituitary center)
Location: McAllen/Edinburg, TX – Neurosurgical Institute of the Valley (Affiliated with the region’s leading Level I Trauma Centers and Oncological groups)
Overview
Join a pioneering, high-acuity neurosurgical practice founded by a fellowship-trained skull base and neuro-oncology surgeon. Our mission is to serve a medically underserved region in South Texas by establishing the only center in the area dedicated to comprehensive skull base, neuro-oncology, and pituitary care. We are seeking a smart, driven, and detail-oriented Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to become a foundational member of our growing team.
This is a foundational role with an opportunity to build a transformative subspecialty practice from the ground up. You will work side-by-side with the founding neurosurgeon in both outpatient and hospital settings, contributing meaningfully to clinical excellence, workflow design, and the patient experience.
Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed pre- and post-operative neurological assessments.
- Assist with consults, rounding, and coordination of care at a leading Level I Trauma Center.
- First assist in the OR (training available) and manage post-op recovery and follow-up.
- Review and interpret neuroimaging (CT/MRI) with the attending physician.
- Educate patients and families on diagnoses, surgical plans, and recovery processes.
- Help build clinical pathways, educational materials, and documentation workflows.
- Contribute to tumor board preparation, data capture, research initiatives and patient navigation through their oncological care.
- Use AthenaHealth EMR for efficient and streamlined documentation and patient management.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree from an accredited PA or NP program.
- Current Texas licensure (or eligibility).
- NCCPA certification or appropriate NP credentials.
- Experience in neurosurgery, critical care, or trauma is highly desirable—but excellent clinical judgment, adaptability, and a strong work ethic are the most important qualities we seek.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
- Comfort with EMRs (preferably Athena), mobile documentation tools, and imaging review systems.
Practice Culture
Our practice is built on a foundation of clinical excellence, integrity, and collaboration. As a new physician-led team, we are committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care in an environment that fosters trust and mutual respect. We value autonomy, accountability, and compassionate patient care. In our startup environment, new ideas are not just welcomed—they are essential, as in an ability to adapt and team work. Contributions are recognized, and personal and professional growth is actively supported.
What We Offer
- Very competitive salary with potential for performance-based bonuses after the first year in practice.
- Comprehensive benefits package.
- Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) with opportunity for professional development.
- Minimal bureaucracy, high-impact work.
