Full Job Description

HeartPlace – US Heart and Vascular has an excellent employment opportunity for a Part-time Physician Assistant in Colin County area.

Experience in Electrophysiology is required.

General Summary

Under the direction of physicians, practices as an extender/collaborator for the physician(s) supported, enabling panel physician(s) to broaden the scope and effectiveness of their practice. Evaluates and treats according to established plan of care. Supports ancillary staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

SCOPE OF PRACTICE

Diagnose and manage acute, episodic and chronic illness.

Services include, but are not limited to;

Practices as an extender/collaborator for the physicians they support

Evaluates & treats following an established plan of care

Supports ancillary staff; sonographers, nurses and medical assistants.

Responds to patient calls

Ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests

Prescriptions of pharmacologic agents and non-pharmacologic therapies

Health promotions, disease prevention, patient and family teaching and counseling

Accountable for knowledge of the statutes and rules relating to advanced practice nursing and function within the boundaries of the advance practice category.

This process includes:

Assessment of health status

Obtaining of relevant health and medical history

Conduction of Physical Exam

Performs and orders preventative and diagnostic procedures

Identifies health and medical risk factor

Diagnosis

Formulates a differential diagnosis based on history, physical exam, and diagnostic test results.

Development of a Treatment Plan

Orders and interprets diagnostic tests

Selects appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions

Develops patient education plans to include but not limited to impatient discharge planning, inpatient and outpatient medication regimens, disease prevention and chronic disease management.

Implementation of Treatment Plans

Individualized and consistent based on scientific principles, theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise.

Conducts and interprets diagnostic testing to include but not limited to: 12 lead EKG’s, Holter Monitors, Event recorders, Pacemaker Interrogation, Bi-V pacemaker optimizations, 2-D echocardiograms.

Prescribes medications by virtue of being a physician’s primary practice site under Section 3.06(d) (6) of the Texas Medical Practice Act. May prescribe for all categories of dangerous drugs and medical devices. May prescribe for controlled drugs, scheduled 111-V with the following limitations:

Maximum 30-day supply with refills

Additional prescriptions for the individual only with prior consultation with the physician and only for the persons 12 years of age or older.

May authorize generic substitutions

Will provide instruction to the patient on use of any medications prescribed, including appropriate warnings and monitoring of lab results.

May request and sign for samples of any category of dangerous drug for which the APN may sign a prescription.

May prescribe only for the patients the delegating physician has established or will establish a physician/patient relationship but this does not require that the physician see the patient within a specified period of time.

Prescribe only at a site where the collaborating physicians spend a majority of their time, a licensed hospital where both the nurse practitioner and the physicians are authorized to practice.

The number of refills shall not exceed a 1-year supply for acute and chronic conditions, except after consultation with the supervising physician.

Must be credentialed/privileged for prescriptive authority and will adhere to the Medical Staff Bylaws regarding prescriptive procedures at those affiliated hospitals. May write prescriptions using single signature prescriptions.

Makes referrals as required to other health professionals.

Provides relevant education and training to nursing and clinical staff.

Documentation of Patient Status and Care

Responsible for maintaining accurate, legible and confidential records.

Responsible for Quality Assurance and Continued Competence

Participates in quality assurance review, including systematic review of records and treatment plans.

Maintains competence by attending continuing education programs.

Required to maintain certification in compliance with current state law.

Applies standardized care guidelines in clinical practice.

Research

Supports research by developing, conducting or participating in studies.

Disseminates and incorporates findings into their practice.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner or physician assistant program.

Must have electrophysiology experience.

Current authorization to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) by the Board of Nurse examiners for the State of Texas.

Current certification from a nationally recognized organization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Current authorization for prescriptive authority from the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas and Board of Medical Examiners for the State of Texas.

1. Current CPR certification.

2. Fluently speak, read, and write English.

3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

4. Understanding of OSHA requirements in a clinical setting

5. Understanding of HIPAA requirements.
