DIS is currently seeking a Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant who will be responsible for assisting Veterans with veteran care. This will be supporting the VA at the VA Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Milwaukee, WI)
The Physician’s Assistant will : provide on-site Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CTPA) Services in accordance with the specifications contained herein to beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center (VAMC), Milwaukee, WI. CTPA services are needed to support the cardiothoracic surgery program at the Milwaukee VAMC. CTPA services include assisting in the Operating Room (OR) as the first or second surgical assistant to the resident or staff physician, helping to open and close all incisions pertinent to CT surgery, harvesting veins, and other duties as directed within the defined scope of practice. CTPAs shall be board-certified.

VA Business Hours: Contractor CTPA services will be provided Tuesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CTPAs shall be on time, in location, and available to perform services as scheduled. The payment for any leave, including sick leave, vacation time, military leave and educational leave are the responsibility of the contractor.
On-Call Coverage: The contractor shall also be responsible for providing on-call coverage Tuesday 4:30 p.m. to Wednesday 8:30 a.m., Wednesday 5:30 p.m. to Thursday 7:30 a.m., and Thursday 1:00 p.m. to Friday 12:00 a.m. On-call means the scheduled CTPA will carry a cellular phone/pager and is able to report to the Milwaukee VAMC within 30 minutes. While on-call for the Milwaukee VAMC, the CTPAs covered by this task order are not to be concurrently on-call to both the Milwaukee VAMC and another institution for the same period. The contractor shall create a call schedule with a primary CTPA and a secondary CTPA on-call, thus always having someone available for VA call.
Job Responsibilities:
- Acts as First Assistant or Second Assistant to surgeon during surgical procedures i.e., holds retractors, ties off vessels and tissues, repairs incisions and lacerations, cuts and cauterizes tissues, etc., as needed and as directed for wide variety of surgical cases i.e., orthopedic, general surgery, vascular, OB/GYN, etc. Performs complex surgical techniques as needed and as directed by physician.
- All other specific tasks delegated by supervising physician in accordance to the incumbent’s knowledge and experience developed under the supervising physician
- Documents all procedures and/or services to patients on face sheets and processes face sheets in accordance with established procedures to ensure accurate billing to patient accounts
- Shares on-call responsibilities with the rest of the team as directed by team leader
- Performs all activities in accordance with established policies and protocols i.e., all orders supervised and countersigned by physician, etc.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Must hold certification/licensure as a CSA, LSA, RNFA, PA-C or NP.
- Previous surgical experience as a first or second assistant
- Cardiothoracic experience
- Ability to build and maintain business relationships and retain and grow the business.
- Must possess strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to work at multiple locations as needed.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with team members, hospital staff and physicians.
- Ability to work flexible hours as scheduled, including weekends and holidays, and to be on-call as scheduled. Must be able to respond to calls or pages within 30 minutes.
