Job Description
This 7-semester PAS program is a blend of online and on-campus activities that provide a similar curriculum as the residential program. This hybrid position allows the faculty member to live remotely from campus; however, PAS faculty members must be able to travel and stay in Charleston for designated periods for teaching and required program events. The program seeks to fill 2 open-rank hybrid faculty positions with various expertise covering the depth and breadth of the PAS curriculum. Principal faculty in the Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) Program are expected to teach an agreed-upon teaching load in meeting the needs of the Division. The primary objective of this role is to enhance the Program by offering knowledgeable and experienced oversight for the planning, implementation, and development of the instructional curriculum. The faculty member will deliver consistent and competent instructional support to the Program, faculty, and students, working diligently to ensure compliance with all ARC-PA standards while delivering top-tier educational experiences for our students. Regular consultation with the Program Director and other colleagues will be essential to supporting the Program’s goals.
Candidates for the Assistant, Associate, or Full, must have a proven track record of teaching, advising, research/scholarship and service, consistent with MUSC-ranked faculty. The MUSC University is unable to employ remote workers in certain states due to the states’ respective regulatory requirements and stipulations that are not operationally feasible for our organization. These states include Wyoming, California, North Dakota, Ohio, and Washington State.
Full-Time Hybrid Faculty member will report to the Director, Division of Physician Assistant Studies-Hybrid (PAS). The Divisions of Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) are housed within the Department of Clinical Sciences which is the home of four accredited professional practice programs: Anesthesia for Nurses (Doctorate), Cardiovascular Perfusion (Masters), Physician Assistant Studies-Residential (Masters) and Genetic Counseling (Masters). The Department is also home to the Division of Healthcare Studies which offers students opportunities to acquire a Bachelor of Science degree. Additional programs within the College include Occupational Therapy (Doctorate), Physical Therapy (Doctorate), Speech Language Pathology (Masters), Health Administration (Masters and Doctorate), Health Informatics (Masters) and Health and Rehabilitation Science (PhD).
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the PAS-Hybrid Division Director with contributions from the Chair and Dean.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as Principal Faculty reporting to the Division Director.
- Instruct courses in the PAS program aligned with clinical and/or professional expertise to meet the needs of the program.
- Monitor, evaluate and remediate student academic performance.
- Oversee and assess individual course evaluations.
- Act as an academic advisor for students.
- Participate in scholarly activities relevant to the role of PA faculty.
- Participate in service activities relevant to the role of PA faculty.
- Actively engage in local, regional, and national PA professional organizations.
- Provide valuable input for ongoing program assessment and improvements.
- Engage in the recruitment, advising, and retention of students.
- Participate in the admissions process, including application reviews, candidate interviews, and selection meetings.
- Contribute to the accreditation process as delegated by the Division Director.
- Continuously assess and propose changes to programmatic policies and objectives, including mission statements, program goals, and learning outcomes.
- Maintain all relevant professional certifications.
- Attend online college-wide meetings.
- Participate in White Coat ceremonies, graduation events, and other related activities.
- Foster a collegial environment for faculty, staff, students, community, and stakeholders.
- Fulfill additional duties assigned by the Division Director or Dean of the College of Health Professions.
- Communicate and advance the strategic objectives and initiatives of the University, School, and Department, including promoting Diversity and Inclusion while creating an environment that enables all members of the university community to thrive.
Additional Duties:
In alignment with ARC-PA Standard A2.05, the Principal Faculty and Division Director are tasked with and will actively engage in the following processes:
- Developing, reviewing, and, as necessary, revising the program’s mission statement, goals, and competencies.
- Selecting applicants for admission to the PAS program.
- Providing instruction to students.
- Assessing student performance.
- Advising students academically.
- Ensuring access to remedial instruction.
- Designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum.
- Evaluating the overall effectiveness of the program.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- A minimum of two years of previous teaching experience.
- A minimum of three years of clinical practice experience as a Physician Assistant.
- Current certification from the National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA)
- Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies or a related field, doctorate preferred.
