Fellowship Summary
Global Neurosciences Institute (GNI) is a leading, rapidly expanding comprehensive neurosurgical practice with multiple hospital affiliations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We house the largest team of dual-trained vascular neurosurgeons in the Philadelphia region, offering both conventional and endovascular expertise. We are involved in cutting-edge research trials, our physician leaders are educators, and our comprehensive center handles patients transferred from multiple outside hospitals in our network.
GNI has partnered with Salus at Drexel University to create a 12-month intensive training program designed to provide physician assistants with the specialized skills and clinical experience needed to excel in neurosurgical care. Fellows will rotate through several modules to gain exposure to all neurosurgical settings, including:
- Neurosurgery bootcamp
- Surgical skills and techniques
- Neurocritical care
- Outpatient neurosurgery
- Research and elective experience
Fellows will be an integral part of the neurosurgical team, gaining hands-on experience in:
- First-assisting in surgery
- Suturing
- Central and arterial line placement
- Assisting with EVD placement
- Lumbar punctures
- Shunt programming
- Brace fitting
- Wound management
- Steroid and Botox injections
Training will include direct mentorship, procedural skill development, structured didactic sessions, case reviews, readings, and grand rounds. Upon successful completion, fellows will receive a certificate of completion from GNI and Drexel/Salus, preparing them to become leaders in neurosurgical care.
Program Details
- Duration: 12 months
- Location: The primary site is St. Mary’s Medical Center in Langhorne, PA. The fellow will also visit various outpatient offices in the greater Philadelphia area and has the option to spend time at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (city campus).
- Stipend: $80,000, paid in biweekly installments over the course of the 12 months. No tuition fees.
- Benefits: The position is eligible for Global Neurosciences Institute benefits package including health insurance, malpractice coverage, PTO, CME.
- Hours: Work schedule will vary depending on the module. This may include 12-hour inpatient shifts, 8-hour outpatient shifts, and rotating weekends.
Please Note: Living expenses including transportation, housing, and meals are the responsibility of the fellow.
Qualifications
- Graduate or near-graduate of an ARC-PA accredited PA program (students near the end of their program and PAs looking to switch specialties are encouraged to apply).
- Certification by the NCCPA (students preparing to take the PANCE are eligible).
- Current state licensure or eligibility for licensure in PA and NJ (licensure may be pending at the time of application; students nearing program completion are eligible).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration
- Demonstrated interest in neurosurgery or related specialties.
