Full Job Description

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • To provide state of the art medical care for Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital patients and support the mission.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • CONTRIBUTE TO THE FINANCIAL HEALTH OF THE GROUP
      • By assisting Good Shepherd physicians with all patients needs to allow these physicians to increase revenue through services.
      • By augmenting the physician’s data gathering abilities and assist the supervising physician in reaching decisions and instituting care plans for the physician’s patients.
      • This includes ordering and interpreting laboratory or radiological studies, analyzing all patient data and developing a treatment plan for the patient, initiate treatment or be sure that the treatment plans is being carried out, assess the progress of that treatment, and alter the plan as necessary, order, prescribe, dispense and administer drugs, medical devices, diagnostic or therapeutic medical regimens as designated by the supervising physician
    • OCCUPATION SPECIFIC TASK
      • Administer or order diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests.
      • Examine patients to obtain information about their physical condition.
      • Instruct and counsel patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
      • Interpret diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
      • Make tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients.
      • Obtain, compile and record patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination.
      • Order medical and laboratory supplies and equipment.
      • Perform suturing and wound care, and infection management.
      • Prescribe therapy or medication with physician approval.
      • Visit and observe patients on hospital rounds or house calls, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to physician.

    • ACCOMPLISHES JOB SPECIFIC RESULTS
      • By attending daily morning rounds on assigned inpatient service with staff physiatrist to assess patient status and prescribe, plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate patient care
      • By attending weekly team panel and family conferences to discuss each patient’s progress, interventions, education and discharge plan as well as address all family needs
      • By writing progress notes and dictations as requested by physiatrist
      • By obtaining health histories and physical exams on newly admitted patients, include dictated reports
      • By prescribing necessary therapies including OT, PT, speech and psychology with physiatrist
      • By coordinating outpatient medications with newly prescribed medications to prevent duplication once discharged
      • By monitoring and/or treat unstable existing co morbidities
      • By ordering, performing, and interpreting lab tests for diagnosing
      • By preparing discharges, including prescriptions, follow up information, further testing
      • By coordinating smooth transition to after care by contacting family/treating physicians
      • By forwarding all necessary documentation to support continuity of care
      • By assisting care management in providing coordination of health care services
      • By focusing on patient’s well being
      • By preventing health problems through patient education
      • By taking “first call” for patient clinical concerns raised by floor nurses and therapists, forming a clinical plan
        • communicating with staff physiatrist when appropriate
      • By providing coverage to address all patient and staff concerns while staff physiatrist is off campus
      • By assisting in developing clinical protocols
      • By maintaining open communication with referring and consulting physicians with issues that are impeding progress and keeping established goals from being met
      • By providing formal/informal education to nurses to enhance their critical thinking skills and become more proficient in physical assessment, interpretation of findings/data
        • increasing their awareness of noting subtle changes that may need immediate MD/PA assessment
      • By participating in physician office or specialty clinics as requested by staff physiatrist
      • By maintaining flexible hours

      • For inpatient, outpatient and consulting services when needed.
    • PARTICIPATE IN THE GOOD SHEPHERD ON CALL SCHEDULE
      • By being available for coverage of inpatient/outpatients as required
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.       • Education
        • Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies required
      • Work Experience
        • 1-2 years of relevant experience as a Physician Assistant preferred
        • Previous experience in rehabilitation preferred
      • Licenses / Certifications
        • Physician Assistant license required

Location: Good Shepherd Rehabilitation · Physician Group PMR – Physician Schedule: Full Time (40 hrs/wk), Day Shift, TBD
