Full Job Description

Job Summary:

Supports all aspects of the Orthopedic surgeons clinical practice. Provide high quality health care to Kaiser Permanente members in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with accepted professional practice standards. Supports the clinical practice of Orthopedic surgeons.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct assessment, diagnosis and formulation/implementation of treatment plan for patients presenting with orthopedic illness or injury, in clinic and Hospital (ED,OR, etc.). Outpatient responsibilities include histories and physicals, preoperative exams, ordering diagnostic studies and medications, screening referrals, scheduling surgeries, and post-operative follow-up. Significant time is spent handling patient inquiries regarding preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative care. Major responsibilities will include but not limited to the following duties: Hospital duties, minor fracture reduction, casting/splinting, hematoma blocks, evaluation for possible surgery (including scheduling cases as needed), relay info to Orthopedic surgeon on call, History & Physical for admits, communication with Hospitalists on admits, consults. Clinic duties, responsible for paired clinics with surgeon and solo clinics, Orthopedic surgery post op, pre- ops, follow ups and new patients, first point of contact for Ortho questions, consults, ED evaluations, assisting with medication refills, periodically respond to messages in physicians in-basket or similar systems (First go to for Advice Nurses).
  • Provide surgical services as a first assistant with Orthopedic surgeon on regular department surgical rotation, OR duties, assist in surgery with Orthopedic Surgeon, write postop orders as needed for surgeon, help with postop checks, help with general duties of facilitating efficiency with OR day as needed by surgeon.
  • Provide inpatient care by rounding on Orthopedic surgical patients. Responsibilities include writing post- operative orders, charting follow-up notes, changing dressings, removing sutures, complete all discharge summaries and write discharge orders for follow-up care in the clinic. Other duties: Weekend rounding rotation. Performs other duties as requested.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience in a surgical setting with an emphasis on supporting surgeon practice
  • Minimum one (1) year surgical 1st assisting experience within the last 3 years
Education
  • Graduate of approved Nurse Practitioner program, Physician Assistant program or equivalent requirements to meet State licensure.
License, Certification, Registration
  • This job requires credentials from multiple states. Credentials from the primary work state are required before hire. Additional Credentials from the secondary work state(s) are required post hire.
  • Nurse Practitioner License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire AND Nurse Practitioner National Certificate AND Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License (Washington) within 6 months of hire AND Registered Nurse License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire AND Registered Nurse License (Washington) within 6 months of hire

OR

  • Physician Assistant License (Washington) within 6 months of hire AND Physician Assistant National Certificate AND Physician Assistant License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire
  • Drug Enforcement Administration Registration
  • National Provider Identifier required at hire
Additional Requirements:
  • Thorough and working knowledge of diseases, injuries and their treatment
  • Thorough and working knowledge of surgical techniques
  • Working knowledge of state health care laws, licensing board regulations and controlled substance regulations
  • Ability to assess, diagnose and plan effective treatment for diseases and injuries
  • Ability to use appropriate procedural/testing equipment, to see large volume of patients, and to interface with large physician and support staff
  • Recognition of normal and abnormal surgical anatomy
  • Safe patient positioning and padding
  • Safe tissue handling and retraction techniques
  • Suturing of deep and superficial tissues
  • Control of bleeding
  • Application of post op dressing and braces
  • Writing post-op orders
  • Post-op protocols for blood transfusions, fluid balance, oral intake, bowel and urinary care, IV narcotic and other pain management
  • Post-op protocols for prophylaxis for DVT, mobilization, therapy, dislocation and weight-bearing restrictions
  • Knowledge of UM requirements for hospitals
  • Compact License is acceptable in lieu of a Washington RN license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience in Orthopedic setting with emphasis on Orthopedic procedures
  • Minimum one (1) year Orthopedic surgical assisting experience within the last 3 years
