Job Summary: ThePhysician Assistant will work directly with an Orthopedic Surgeon providing primary health care and performing selective medical services. This position will assist with surgeries 2-3 days a week and work the remainder of the week in the clinic.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients. Review patient records.
- Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures needed.
- Performs a complete physical exam and records findings. Establishes presumptive diagnosis.
- Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
- Synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention.
- Administers injections, immunizations, and oral medications. Sutures wounds. Prepares written prescription orders for drugs and controlled substances.
- Interviews and advises patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
- Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provides patient education.
- Performs casting treatment of simple fracture conditions and institution of traction treatment of fracture conditions.
- Performs first assistant operating duties, i.e., suturing of surgical wounds, splinting, and postoperative casting.
- Assists physicians by recording patient progress notes, issues diagnostic orders, and transcribes orders.
- Triages patient telephone calls and provides consultation.
- Performs independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations.
- Provides monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Attends meetings as required.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Performs related work as required.
Education:
- Graduate from an accredited Physician’s Assistant program.
Work Experience:
- Orthopedic experience preferred but will consider new graduates.
- Experience applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of medicine to provide ongoing patient care.
- Experience taking medical history, assessing medical condition, and interpreting findings.
- Experience preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the professional medical practice and care, to give and evaluate patient care.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Experience establishing and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
- Ability to handle and resolve challenging problems.
Supervisory Responsibilities: The professional hired will not be responsible for the direct supervision of any staff.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a fast paced, medical clinic setting.
- Facility is a combination of office, exam and treatment rooms, and x-ray rooms with special equipment.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, biohazards, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to a clinic setting.
- Involves frequent contact with patients, physicians, staff and the public.
- Contact involves dealing with sick persons.
- Interaction with others may be constant and interruptive.
- Work may be stressful at times.
- May involve dealing with angry or upset individuals.
- May periodically work outside of normal work hours.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.
- Requires normal physical strength to exert up to 100 pounds of force as needed.
- Requires full range of body motion including bending, stooping and stretching when assisting and lifting patients or to access files and supplies.
- Requires normal concentration regarding complexity and timeliness of decision making.
- Requires normal memory, taking into consideration the amount and type of information involved.
- Average visual acuity necessary to prepare or review documents or operate equipment.
- Ability to speak, frequently conveying detailed or important information or ideas accurately.
- Ability to hear normal speech, both in persona and on the telephone.
