Under the general guidance and direction of the supervising physician, provides medical consultation, routine patient care, and follow-up as directed. Assists physician with procedures and serves as a liaison between the physician and the patient. Collaborates consistently with the supervising physician, nursing staff, support staff, and other members of the health care team.

Performs other job duties as assigned. This position requires age-specific competency. May be required to participate in on-call status.

Heart Hospital: In conjunction with the Medical Director develops evidence based protocols, provides and compiles outcome data, and assists with the implementation of acute care and rehabilitation of patients with cerebral vascular disease.

The Physician Assistant responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Initiates and completes a detailed patient assessment. Initiates the order of laboratory tests, radiological examinations and other routine diagnostic procedures. Performs diagnostic tests at the order of the physician.
  • Diagnoses the actual or potential health problem or need, based upon an analysis of the data collected, and plans therapeutic intervention.
  • Orders and initiates appropriate medication, treatment, and consultation based upon an analysis of the data collected.
  • Orders or performs routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing (not involving tendons, arteries or nerves) wound care, venous and arterial blood draws, and managing simple conditions produced by infection, trauma or other disease processes.
  • Educates the patient regarding prescribed treatment and medication(s).
  • Maintains timely documentation of the patient’s medical record.
  • Makes hospital rounds as directed by the supervising physician.
  • Responsible for face to face patient assessment following therapeutic holds per state and federal regulations. (Mental Health only).
  • Heart Hospital: With assistance of multi-disciplinary management and clinical team, develops, maintains and monitors stroke practice guidelines, order sets and critical paths utilizing evidence based practice. Analyzes patterns of variance from the patient outcomes and implements strategies to resolve them.
  • ER Only: Assist’s in triage and initiates radiographic and laboratory studies for patients to be seen in the main Emergency Department or Minor Care.
  • May examine, treat, and make disposition on patients in triage under the direct physician supervision as time allows. Reports to assigned departmental leadership.
  • Accountable for the delivery of quality patient care.

  • Potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, chemicals. Must follow standard precautions.

  • Requires a Master’s degree or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of Oklahoma.
  • Requires current BLS certification.
  • HEART HOSPITAL ONLY: Previous work experience in care of Neurological patients required, stroke care preferred.
  • EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ONLY: One(1) year of experience in a comprehensive emergency department setting preferred.
  • For INTEGRIS Cardiovascular Physicians: – This job requires the incumbents to operate an INTEGRIS-owned vehicle OR personal vehicle (non INTEGRIS-owned) and therefore must have a current Oklahoma State Drivers License as well as a driving record which is acceptable to our insurance carrier.
