Position Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for practicing medicine with physician supervision and contribute to the physician’s effectiveness by identifying short-term and a long-range patient care issue(s), recommend courses of action; and implements physician directives. As delegated by a physician, elicits patient histories and performs complete physical examinations. Reaches tentative diagnoses and orders appropriate laboratory tests. Counsels patients and family. As delegated by a physician, assists with the diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative healthcare services in medical and surgical care in the outpatient and/or inpatient settings. Duties include conducting examinations, orders and interpret tests, and writing prescriptions.

Essential Duties/Accountabilities

Promotes and maintains patient’s health by providing medical services under the supervision of a physician; Assesses patient health by interviewing patients; performs physical examinations; obtains medical histories.

Establishes diagnoses for a patient’s illness or injuries; Provides routine, acute and chronic patient care including orthopedic exam, wellness physical exams, pre-operative interview and exam (History and Physical), monitoring therapies, administering injections, minor office surgical procedures, and prescribing medications; Completes appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care and services rendered in the medical record; Triages patient calls and takes appropriate action, or refers to appropriate physician or office staff.

Functions as first assistant in the operation room including surgical exposure, suturing and closure; Prepares patients for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic; Performs pre- and post- operative patient education to patients and their families.

Prescribes needed medicines to patients; Writes appropriate orders, including those for narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs; Executes appropriate protocols including prescribing, as necessary, within the scope of license; Provides follow-up and health adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to maintenance care including the appropriate specific instructions from the attending Physician. Conducts minor procedures, including suturing, splinting and casting; Consults with physician and/or specialist, as appropriate; Monitors patients’ progress and keeps records of treatments, surgeries or other medical events.

Communicates with referring or primary care physicians regarding patient care and treatment; Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, physicians, case managers and other advance practitioners.

Develops health care team staff by providing information, educational and experiential growth opportunities; May train and supervise medical residents engaged in specific clinical activities. (MGMAIII).

Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, including infection-control policies and protocols. Assists other staff as needed; takes calls 24/7. Maintains professional and technical knowledge.

All other duties not specifically assigned.

Position Requirements

Education: Physician Assistant Degree required.

Experience: Minimum Three (3) to Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in field or profession.

Technical Skills: Good organizational skills and exceptional customer service skills.

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Certified by NCCPA. Licensed to practice as a Physician’s Assistant in the State of Ohio. BLS required.

Schedule: 80 hours/bi-weekly/variable

Status: Full-Time
