Full Job Description

We are seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused Respiratory Therapist / Anesthesia Support Clinician to join our surgical/anesthesia care team. In this role, you will support patient safety before, during, and after procedures by assisting with airway readiness, oxygen delivery, respiratory monitoring, emergency preparedness, and recovery support.

The ideal candidate has strong clinical judgment, excellent patient-monitoring skills, and experience working in a surgical, anesthesia, emergency, hospital, pediatric, or critical-care setting.

In Ohio, respiratory care includes evaluation of cardiopulmonary function, treatment of cardiopulmonary impairment, monitoring medical gases and artificial airways, use of ventilators and life-support equipment, CPR/respiratory rehabilitation techniques, and certain medication administration for cardiopulmonary testing or treatment. Ohio law also requires a person using the title “respiratory therapist” or providing respiratory care services to hold the appropriate Ohio license or limited permit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the anesthesia and surgical team with patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery support.
  • Monitor respiratory status, oxygen saturation, airway patency, breathing patterns, level of responsiveness, and other patient safety indicators.
  • Prepare, inspect, and maintain oxygen delivery systems, suction, airway equipment, respiratory supplies, patient monitors, emergency equipment, and related devices.
  • Assist with airway support and respiratory interventions within the clinician’s Ohio respiratory care scope, license, training, facility policy, and provider orders.
  • Support the use of medical gases, aerosols, artificial airways, ventilation equipment, and other respiratory care equipment as permitted by Ohio law and facility protocol.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness, including readiness for airway, respiratory, cardiopulmonary, or sedation-related emergencies.
  • Perform CPR and assist with emergency response as permitted by training, certification, and facility policy.
  • Communicate promptly with the anesthesia provider, dentist, physician, nurse, or supervising clinician regarding any change in patient condition.
  • Document respiratory-related assessments, interventions, equipment checks, and patient observations accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
  • Follow infection-control, OSHA, HIPAA, emergency preparedness, and facility safety policies.
  • Participate in emergency drills, quality assurance, equipment checks, and continuing education.

Requirements

  • Current Ohio Respiratory Care Professional license in good standing, or appropriate Ohio limited permit where legally applicable.
  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory care program.
  • RRT credential preferred.
  • BLS required.
  • ACLS and/or PALS strongly preferred, especially in pediatric, surgical, or anesthesia-related settings.
  • Experience in respiratory care, emergency care, ICU, PACU, operating room, anesthesia support, pediatric care, or ambulatory surgery preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of airway management support, oxygen therapy, suction, ventilation equipment, respiratory monitoring, and cardiopulmonary physiology.
  • Ability to recognize respiratory distress, airway compromise, oxygenation concerns, and urgent changes in patient condition.
  • Strong communication, documentation, teamwork, and patient-safety skills.
  • Ability to work calmly and professionally in high-acuity or rapidly changing situations.
  • Ability to perform physical duties, including standing for extended periods, assisting with patient movement, and responding quickly during emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pediatric respiratory care experience.
  • Experience in a surgical center, dental anesthesia setting, hospital operating room, emergency department, ICU, or PACU.
  • Familiarity with anesthesia-related monitoring and emergency airway equipment.
  • Experience with oxygen delivery systems, suction, bag-valve-mask ventilation, airway adjuncts, ventilators, capnography, and pulse oximetry.
  • Strong understanding of infection control, aseptic technique, emergency preparedness, and clinical documentation.

Scope-of-Practice Statement

This position is intended to provide respiratory and anesthesia-support services within the clinician’s lawful scope of practice. The Respiratory Therapist does not independently administer anesthesia, direct anesthesia care, diagnose, prescribe, or perform duties outside the scope permitted by Ohio law, provider orders, facility policy, and documented competency.

Ohio law states that respiratory care must be practiced pursuant to a prescription or other order from an authorized provider and under the supervision of an authorized clinician, including a physician, certain advanced practice nurses, or an authorized physician assistant.

Join our team if you are passionate about patient safety, respiratory care, airway readiness, and high-quality surgical/anesthesia support. We value clinicians who are calm under pressure, detail-oriented, dependable, and committed to excellent patient care in a structured clinical environment.
