JOB DESCRIPTION: PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

REPORTS TO: Physician Owners and Administrator

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide a full range of office based patient care to new and established patients, as delegated by supervising physician(s), within the scope of training and experience. Order and interpret results of diagnostic tests. Prescribe controlled drugs within Pharmacy Board regulations. Maintain patient clinical records in accordance with established standards. Record charges for services and supplies provided to patients. Performs minor office based procedures and assists physicians with surgical procedures in the office and the operating room.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION:

Provide clinical patient evaluation and management services under personal, direct and general supervision of Western New York Ear, Nose & Throat PC physicians.

Maintain knowledge of and utilize established practice protocols in the provision of all services.

See patients as scheduled and appropriately determined by nature of problem, referral, and insurance carrier rules.

Prescribe and administer medications and injections under physician supervision, utilizing established practice protocols.

Collect specimens as appropriate and order lab tests and radiological studies utilizing established practice protocols.

Interpret results of diagnostic radiological and lab studies.

Dictate medical notes in accordance with established guidelines and practice policy.

Answer telephone inquiries of a medical nature and initiate treatment or changes to treatment according to established practice protocols. Screen patient’s calls to physicians using Doctor/Nurse Phone Message form and aid receptionists in determining necessity for and priority of appointments.

Maintain normal office hours as scheduled

Be available “on call” by cell phone for patient questions during regular business hours Monday- Friday. Notify on-call physicians of all phone calls considered to be emergency in nature or beyond normal scope of practice. Contact physician on call or practice administrator in times of natural disasters to ascertain need to be available in the office.

Periodically, as requested, audit medical records for proper and complete documentation of evaluation and management coding and maintain a trend analysis of code selections. Provide input to providers on trends with recommendations for compliance to requirements.

Research and report on items of interest such as publications, software, equipment, protocols, rules and regulations, etc. as directed by physicians or administrators.

Perform patient education activities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Must be a graduate of a Physician’s Assistant program and licensed by the state of New York.

Must maintain knowledge of and apply the current evaluation and management documentation guidelines in determining and documenting the level of service provided to each patient.

Must maintain knowledge of and apply current laws, rules, regulations and restrictions on services PA’s are authorized to provide by each insurance carrier type.

AUTHORITY BOUNDARIES

Works under the personal, direct or general supervision of and maintains a high level of communication and coordination with the Western New York Ear, Nose & Throat PC physicians.

All medical record notes originated by the Physician’s Assistant must be reviewed and signed by a supervising Western New York Ear, Nose & Throat PC physician.

Maintains a close coordination of schedule and all administrative activities with the practice administrator.
