Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) for an on-site position supporting construction management and delivery of active projects. In this role, you will manage the scope of work, schedule, contractor’s field procedures and construction problems, and other technical information for the successful delivery of projects within budget and schedule. Work generally pertains to taxiway/runway paving & lighting systems, building improvements, civil site work, utility modifications and upgrades, and maintenance of traffic, with some electrical, environmental, and plumbing knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the day-to-day Construction Manager for assigned projects, reporting directly to the Resident Engineer.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer in coordinating with Airport Facilities, operations personnel, and other stakeholders to ensure work progresses efficiently while minimizing impacts to airport operations.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the contract documents and assist the Resident Engineer in interpreting and applying contract provisions to administer the contract and enforce policies necessary for the successful completion of projects.
  • Advise the Resident Engineer on contractor disputes and assist in resolving issues through established contractual and administrative processes.
  • Supervise and mentor field staff, ensuring they effectively monitor construction activities, verify proper installation of work, and maintain accurate and complete project documentation.
  • Review contractor submittals and Requests for Information (RFIs), ensuring field staff receive timely updates regarding contract requirements, revisions, and approved changes.
  • Review and approve daily field inspection reports and narratives to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Track classified work items, time-and-material (T&M) tickets, and other project records to maintain proper documentation and accountability.
  • Prepare Extra Work Order, Net Cost Change Order, Field Ordered Work, and associated cost estimates.
  • Review contractor payment applications for accuracy and contract compliance, assist the Resident Engineer in preparing monthly reports on project progress and financial status, and proactively identify and elevate potential risks or issues.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing construction projects of varying size, scope, and complexity, including projects ranging from $500,000 to $5 million or greater and involving multiple crews and shift operations.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety certification, with training in fall protection, Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT), confined space entry, and permit-required confined space entry.
  • Ability to support non-standard work hours, including potential night and weekend shifts, and accommodate extended work hours as project needs require.
  • Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., e-Builder or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong knowledge of construction management practices, contract administration, project documentation, and coordination with multiple stakeholders.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • ACI Concrete Special Inspector, Structural Steel Bolting Inspector, and Work Zone Safety certifications.
  • Airport-related experience would be preferable.
