Full Job Description

About the Role

The General Manager of Bond St Coffee and Goods is the operational heart of the shop — a hands-on leader who is as comfortable pulling espresso shots and greeting regulars as they are reconciling the register, managing a team schedule, and placing supplier orders. This role demands both a sharp business mind and a genuine love for hospitality. You’ll be the standard-bearer for everything that makes Bond St what it is: exceptional coffee, a warm neighborhood feel, and a team that takes pride in their craft.

Core Responsibilities

Payroll Administration

  • Reconcile and process weekly payroll accurately and on time, ensuring all hours, tips, and adjustments are properly captured and submitted.
  • Maintain employee records including hire dates, pay rates, and tax documentation in compliance with NYC and New York State labor law.
  • Track and approve timecards, flagging discrepancies or missed punches before each pay cycle closes.
  • Coordinate with ownership on any payroll adjustments, raises, or one-time compensation items.
  • Stay current on wage and hour regulations, including NYC minimum wage requirements and tip credit rules.

Inventory Management & Ordering

  • Conduct regular inventory counts for coffee, consumables, retail merchandise, and food items, maintaining accurate par levels for each category.
  • Place timely orders with all vendors — roasters, dairy suppliers, food purveyors, and packaging — to prevent stockouts without over-ordering.
  • Build and maintain vendor relationships; negotiate pricing and terms where appropriate, and communicate any supply issues to ownership promptly.
  • Receive and verify all deliveries against purchase orders, flagging discrepancies or quality issues and coordinating returns as needed.
  • Track waste, monitor spoilage, and implement systems to reduce shrink and control cost of goods.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and properly labeled back-of-house storage system.

Cash Handling & Reconciliation

  • Open and close registers, ensuring drawer counts are accurate at the start and end of each shift.
  • Perform daily cash reconciliation against POS reports, investigating and documenting any variances.
  • Prepare bank deposits and maintain secure cash-handling procedures throughout all operating hours.
  • Generate and review daily, weekly, and monthly sales reports; identify trends and flag anomalies to ownership.
  • Ensure the team follows cash handling protocols at all times; retrain staff when deviations are identified.

Team Management & Development

  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, and Train The Bond Street Way all café staff in alignment with the Bond St culture and service standards.
  • Lead regular one-on-ones and team check-ins; provide constructive, timely feedback and recognize strong performance.
  • Manage performance issues with professionalism and consistency, following documented progressive discipline procedures & terminations when necessary.
  • Cultivate a team culture rooted in hospitality, craftsmanship, and mutual respect — modeling the behavior you expect from others.
  • Identify training and development opportunities; coach baristas on technique, product knowledge, and customer engagement.
  • Manage and resolve interpersonal conflicts with fairness and discretion, escalating to ownership when appropriate.

Scheduling

  • Build weekly schedules that balance business needs, labor budgets, and team availability — published no fewer than one week in advance.
  • Manage time-off requests, swap requests, and last-minute call-outs with minimal disruption to service.
  • Monitor daily labor versus sales to ensure staffing levels are appropriate throughout each shift; adjust in real time when needed.
  • Maintain a reliable on-call or coverage system so the store is never left short-staffed.
  • Anticipate seasonal volume shifts, special events, and holidays and adjust staffing plans accordingly.

Floor Duties: Barista, Cashier & Hospitality

  • Work a meaningful number of floor shifts each week — operating the espresso bar, running register, and handling the full scope of café service.
  • Uphold and demonstrate Bond St’s drink preparation standards on every shift, including dialing in espresso, steaming milk to spec, and executing all menu items consistently.
  • Deliver warm, genuine, neighborhood-caliber hospitality to every guest; set the tone for the entire team by example.
  • Handle guest concerns with grace and authority, resolving issues on the spot and following up when needed.
  • Ensure the floor, bar, and service areas are clean, organized, and stocked throughout your shift and at close.
  • Champion product knowledge across the team: origin stories, roast profiles, seasonal offerings, and food menu details.

Store Cleanliness & Operational Standards

  • Maintain the café to the highest standards of cleanliness and food safety at all times, including bar equipment, brewing tools, retail displays, restrooms, and all public-facing areas.
  • Oversee daily, weekly, and deep-cleaning tasks; ensure checklists are completed and signed off by closing staff.
  • Manage routine equipment maintenance schedules; coordinate service calls and repairs with vendors in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with NYC Department of Health standards; lead preparation for health inspections and maintain a food handler documentation file.
  • Own the store’s overall aesthetic — merchandise displays, signage, seasonal décor — in line with the Bond St brand.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of café or food & beverage management experience, with demonstrated responsibility for a team of 5 or more.
  • A strong foundation in espresso craft — you can dial in a grinder, diagnose a bad shot, and teach others to do the same.
  • Proven experience managing payroll, inventory, and cash operations in a retail or hospitality setting.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and an ownership mindset: you notice what needs doing and do it.
  • Clear, empathetic communicator — equally effective giving feedback to a new hire and presenting financials to ownership.
  • A genuine love for hospitality, coffee, and the kind of neighborhood business that Bond St aspires to be.
  • Proficiency with POS systems (Toast, Square, or similar); comfort with Google Workspace / spreadsheets.
  • Food Handler’s Certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes early mornings, weekends, and occasional holidays.

Pay: $50,000.00 – $60,000.00 per year
