The Physician Assistant of the Phase 1 Cancer Clinical Trials Office Research Program will work closely with the Disease and Modality Team Leader, Attending Physicians, and Program Director of the Early Phase Program. The PA reports to the Phase 1 Disease and Modality Physician Leader regarding patient care and collaborates with the Sr. Director for Cancer Clinical Research Administration and the Director of the Cancer Clinical Trials Office to screen eligible patients for trial and provide care to patients on early phase cancer clinical trials, within the scope of practice and in accordance with the clinical research protocol. The Physician Assistant writes orders for the RN and staff to carry out. Essential Functions

Responsible for reviewing patient histories, conducting physical exams, and managing the medical care of patients with cancer who are enrolled on early phase clinical trials, providing treatment and supportive care.
- To ensure proper medical care is provided.

Responsible for providing proper explanation of study participation—including potential treatment options, alternatives to treatments, expected and unexpected side effects of medications provided.

Responsible for the assessment of patients on early phase clinical trials, including review of medical history, review of systems and complaints to assess Adverse Events associated with participation in clinical trials and management of adverse events in accordance with scope of practice and protocol requirements.

Reports to and supports the physician/medical director (MD) in such a way that the Early Phase Research program enrolls and treats patients in an efficient and integrated fashion

Take appropriate patient notes and ensure that patient care is logged in the EHR.
- Utilizes specific information in the development of teaching and long term plans.
- Documents patient/involved others’ response to teaching/long term planning.
- Evaluates and documents patient/involved others’ response to teaching/long term planning.

- maintain compliance with GCP and protocol requirements.

Collaborates and communicates with the other members of the clinical and clinical research team for an integrated medical treatment plan for each participant on an early phase clinical trial.
- To ensure open communication with physicians, administration and clinical staff—clinic and infusion staff

Writes appropriate medical orders for RNs to execute.
- To ensure all medical orders and documentations are to standards.

Qualifications
-
1-3 years Experience working with cancer patients required, prior experience in clinical trials and grant funded projects

Experience with therapeutic research preferred

NYS Physician Assistant License and Registration

Excellent interpersonal skills required for interaction with participants.

Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
