Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for the position of the founding Program Director of its Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. The Program Director will play a central role in the design and implementation of this new program. This position is a full-time, tenure-track administrative role with teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities. The successful candidate will be hired as an associate or full professor and will be evaluated for tenure. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position responsibilities:
- Oversight of the Physician Assistant program including program assessment, planning, fiscal management, faculty hiring, and curriculum development/implementation.
- Lead and be responsible for development of all ARC-PA required accreditation candidacy documents, and oversight of all ongoing accreditation assessment and compliance.
- Supervision and oversight of recruitment and retention of program personnel including the PA Program Medical Director, and Principal and Instructional Faculty.
- Positive mentorship of faculty within the program.
- Active participation on the school’s administrative leadership team.
- Promote a collaborative culture among academic programs inside and beyond the College.
- Represent the PA Program at the University, community, professional, and other organizational functions.
- Active and continuous contributions to curriculum development/implementation, and scholarship that advances the profession.
- Participation in and support of professional and community-based service.
- Actively engage local and regional stakeholders to grow professional connections and promote the PA profession within our community.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- An earned academic or clinical doctorate (e.g., PhD, EdD, DSc)
- Hold current or emeritus National Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification status.
- Current physician assistant license or eligibility for licensure in the state of North Carolina.
- A minimum of six years employment in higher education with at least three years as principal or instructional faculty in a PA program.
- Eligible for the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
- Demonstrated record of successful teaching and scholarship.
- Minimum 2 years of PA clinical practice experience.
- Experience providing effective leadership in an academic or clinical unit.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Previous PA Program Director Experience
- Previous higher education experience within a PA program as principal faculty and/or as an administrator within PA program leadership
- Experience in leading successful ARC-PA accreditation processes
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Notable experience in promotion of rural health and health disparities, particularly as it relates to compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., JEDI).
Required Certifications or Licensures
Licensed as a Physician Assistant in NC, or eligible for licensure in NC.
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is an interdisciplinary and integrated academic unit that includes three professional schools: the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences. The CHHS has approximately 300 permanent employees, and 4,500 students spread across 18 current academic programs. Housed within CHHS are administrative, academic, and student support teams, a community engagement unit, and the Business Core Services Team (BCST) which provides centralized financial, human resources, facility management, systems training and support, and reporting services to all CHHS units.
