Job Summary

The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider for our Outpatient Infusion Center and Acute Care Clinic provides direct patient care in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, including attending physicians and other medical professionals by collecting and documenting data, obtaining/ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies and professional consultations. The age-specific scope of practice is for patients 18 years and older.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform through physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records
  • Oversight of emergency management of patients
    • Hypersensitivity protocol
    • Code Blue/ 115 first response
  • Assessment of acutely ill patients awaiting admission to the hospital
    • Additional orders for symptom management as needed
    • Collaboration with inpatient medical team for handoff
  • Prescription of medications for symptom management
    • Additional orders as needed
  • Address lab values if outside of regimen parameters to determine if patient can receive treatment
    • Order supplements as needed based on lab values
  • Potential procedures
  • Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Attend program required meetings.
  • Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Maintain Institutional requirements for compliance
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

NP: Graduate of MSN or DNP accredited Nurse Practitioner Program

PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program preferred

Certification

NP: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.)

PA: PA-C

Licensure

NP: Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP

PA: Unrestricted license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA

Both: Federal and State DEA independent license with prescriptive authority

Experience

APP experience is preferred, ideally Oncology/Hematologic Malignancy experience, but recent or new grads, graduating by December 2024 are welcome to apply.

Job Hours

Full-Time, rotating hours, averaging 40 hour week to provide coverage Monday – Friday between the hours of 8am – 8:30pm.
