We are currently searching for an experienced Physician Assistant to work with our Hand Providers in Charlotte.
The Physician Assistant is responsible for providing medical care as delegated by OrthoCarolina physician(s). Responsibilities may include assisting the physician in both the office and hospital setting, independent clinics seeing patients with a variety of orthopedic injuries and illnesses, assisting in the operating room as needed, and performing emergency room and floor consultations.
Essential Functions:

Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examination, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination.

Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests, and interprets test results in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons/staff.

Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and managing infection. Assesses, applies and/or removes a variety of orthopedic casts, splints, and immobilization devices.

Serves as assist-at-surgery for orthopedic procedures.

Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, applies appropriate codes and charges for service, and assists in provision of continuity of care.

Dictates patient records including discharge summaries, history and physical evaluations, operative procedure notes, consultations and office visit notes. Documents patient information and care provided in patient record. Uses computer to access/enter needed data.

Rounds on hospital inpatients as directed by supervising physician(s) to hospitals assigned and performs emergency room and floor consultations as assigned.
Skills and Abilities:

Accurately evaluate patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention or referral.

Skill in evaluating and revising care plans based on patient changes.
Qualifications:

Graduate of AMA accredited physician assistant program.

Current in the following:
-
North Carolina PA license
-
Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
-
3-5 years prior experience in the field of orthopedics required .
Education required:
- Graduate of AMA accredited physician assistant program.
Experience required:
- 0-9 years of experience required
- Prior experience in the field of orthopedics is preferred but not required.
- Prior experience as a physician assistant is preferred but not required.
Professional license or certification requirements:
- Current in the following:
- North Carolina PA license,
- Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants,
- DEA licensure, and
- Medical staff privileges at required hospitals.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license to travel to hospital sites, other clinic offices, and meetings.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of orthopedic anatomy.
- Basic knowledge of orthopedic injuries and illnesses and appropriate work-up and treatment options for them.
- Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols, administration of medications, delivering physical care following treatment plan.
- Ability and knowledge in how to assess patient health and measure/record physiologic and growth indices; gather and analyze physiological, socioeconomic and emotional patient data; and accurately evaluate patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention or referral.
- Ability to obtain patient histories and perform physical assessments. Collect, organize and report data to draw meaningful conclusions and communicate this with supervisors, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Skill in evaluating and revising care plans based on patient changes.
- Wound care management including suturing and suture removal.
- Extremity immobilization, casting, and splinting techniques.
- Ability to work in operating room environment including ability to first assist-at-surgery.
- Ability to make responsible decisions within the scope of a dependent medical practitioner and to carryout appropriate orthopedic care under the supervision of sponsoring physician(s).
- Ability to develop health education programs and materials.
- Exhibit knowledge of State and Federal legislation effecting PAs and of Evaluation and Management codes and procedures for the clinic and in accordance with state/federal regulations and insurance requirements.
