Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center – 2301 Erwin Road – Durham, NC

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider for Duke Pediatric Hematology/Oncology to care for pediatric and adolescent patients with sickle cell, hemophilia, bruising, anemia as well as follow-up of hematology oncology patients at the Children’s Hospital and Health Center in Durham, NC.

The APP will augment a physician’s ability to provide medical services to patients in the clinic and hospital settings. The APP will work in collaboration with physicians and advanced practice providers providing direct patient care services, performing consultations, collecting and documenting data, assisting in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and ordering and scheduling laboratory studies.

Primary hours will be Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Care for pediatric and adolescent patients with hematologic and/or oncologic diagnoses.
  • Responsibilities will include management of outpatient hematology patients as well as some inpatient hematology patient consults and follow-up as well as with coordination of follow-up care post discharge.
  • Obtain patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record data in the patient’s record; write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care; assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
  • Order and schedule laboratory studies and explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects to the patient and family.
  • Perform procedures to include diagnostic lumbar puncture, intrathecal chemotherapy administration, and bone marrow aspirations/biopsies. Be able to administer conscious sedation.
  • Complete prior authorizations as needed
  • Participate in triaging of new patient referrals on a rotating basis, to include coverage when others are out.
  • Carry out daily care and continuity for Pediatric Hematology Oncology outpatients. Monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physician, and maintain record of each patient’s progress, consulting with supervising physician when patient’s progress does not meet anticipated and/or predetermined criteria.
  • Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • May make work assignments for assigned nurse practitioner or PA students. Review the work of lower rated employees; train new personnel.
  • Participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Utilize medical decision making to create an individualized patient plan of care.
  • Respond to EPIC Maestro Care and telephone messages in a timely fashion.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.

Certification

  • BLS required.

License

  • Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
  • Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Experience

1+ years of Pediatric or Adult Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant and/or RN work experience strongly preferred.
