Full Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Physician Assistant to provide comprehensive hematological care in our outpatient hematology department. Under the supervision of a board-certified hematologist, you will deliver independent patient care, assist with procedures, and manage complex hematological conditions including anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, thrombocytopenia, leukemias, lymphomas, and other blood-related diseases. Your role will include conducting patient assessments, performing diagnostic procedures, developing treatment plans, prescribing medications, and providing patient education to ensure optimal outcomes and continuity of care. Responsibilities

  • Plans and organizes care to meet individual patient needs and to ensure appropriate clinical resource utilization per protocols, pathways, and other means
  • Initiates and documents appropriate interventions; evaluates and records patient/family response within practice protocol; prescribes drug therapies per protocol/physician consultation
  • Conducts comprehensive patient assessments and physical examinations for new and follow-up hematology patients
  • Obtains detailed medical histories and documents pertinent clinical findings to develop comprehensive treatment plans
  • Performs and assists physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including bone marrow aspirations and biopsies
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, including laboratory values and imaging studies relevant to hematological conditions
  • Develops, implements, and adjusts treatment plans in collaboration with supervising hematologists
  • Prescribes medications, writes orders, and manages medication adjustments based on patient response and laboratory findings
  • Provides patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment options, medications, and symptom management
  • Monitors patient progress and manages treatment-related symptoms or complications
  • Manages follow-up visits for hematology and oncology patients to ensure physical stability during treatment
  • Evaluates and treats transfusion reactions and other acute hematological concerns
  • Assesses patient/family needs and provides education to promote wellness and optimal health outcomes
  • Recommends community resources and supportive care services to meet patient and family needs
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Participates in case discussions, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education activities
  • Supports survivorship planning and palliative care discussions as appropriate
  • Collaborates with infusion nurses, pharmacists, laboratory specialists, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team

Qualifications Education and Licensure

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Current state licensure as a Physician Assistant (PA-C)

Certifications

  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required

Experience

  • 1-2 years of experience in hematology, oncology, internal medicine, or related specialty preferred
  • Direct clinical experience with hematological conditions and procedures preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills with ability to manage complex hematological conditions
  • Proficiency in hematological diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (bone marrow aspirations and biopsies)
  • Ability to order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging relevant to hematology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with empathy for patients undergoing complex medical treatments
  • Ability to provide compassionate care in a potentially stressful clinical environment
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaborative relationships with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills
  • Commitment to continuing education and professional development in hematology and oncology
  • Knowledge of current hematological treatment protocols and evidence-based practice
