EXEMPT

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide and supervise the provision of the diagnosis and continuous management (including regular clinical reassessments) of diseases and disorders of patients enrolled in START clinics. The physician assistant provides medical services with the supervision of a licensed physician and reports directly to the Medical Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists the physician in the performance of physician’s duties.
  • In the absence of the physician, supervise, through the Head Nurse, the deployment of medical staff.
  • Provides the physician with monthly assessments on the status of illicit drug use of individual patients and the entire clinic population. This includes recommendations of the type of intervention indicated.
  • Evaluates and examines patients, utilize the clinical history, physical examination and the appropriate laboratory data adhering to appropriate standards of treatment.
  • Practices and oversees the provision of health promotion and disease prevention to include administering vaccinations and counseling regarding the virtues of dietary and hygienic interventions where appropriate.
  • Provides first aid and emergency care to patients and staff who become ill during working hours.
  • Provide the Division of Medical Services, Research and Information Technology with periodic performance evaluations of medical staff under their supervision.
  • Assist in the conduct of clinical research projects, which the Division may from time to time be engaged in.
  • Attends on a punctual basis at least ten medical meetings annually.
  • Serves as the Division’s standing committee (Continuous Quality Improvement, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, or Research).
  • Performs all tasks necessary to improve the quality of care, to improve the productivity of medical staff, and to improve patient satisfaction with the medical/nursing care they receive.
  • Performs all reasonable tasks necessary to enhance reimbursement and reduce denials for services rendered.
  • Achieves productivity targets, objectives, and goals as communicated by Division directions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION & COMPETENCIES

  • A graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant Programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
  • Currently registered to practice medicine in the State of New York.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in adult primary care medicine, or board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required.
  • At least one year of experience in Addiction Medicine and certified.
  • Must possess and maintain board certification in Internal and Addiction Medicine.
  • Must possess and maintain current registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • Must maintain current certification in basic life support and as an HIV primary care provider.
  • Must maintain documentation of ongoing continuing medical education to satisfy the requirements of managed care agencies.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software as pertaining to EMR and related systems.
  • Bilingual in any language a plus not required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Able to work outside the traditional hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position directly supervises the Nurse Practioners and indirectly supervises all medical staff (RN, LPN, CMTs)
