Department: Surgical Services / Advanced Practice Providers

Reports To: AVP of Perioperative Services

Job Summary: Hudson Regional Hospital is seeking an experienced and dynamic Physician Assistant to step into a vital leadership role as the Surgical Services PA Team Lead. This position blends clinical expertise with administrative management, overseeing the scheduling, coordination, and professional development of Physician Assistants within our surgical departments. Reporting to the AVP of Perioperative Services, the Team Lead will be instrumental in ensuring optimal PA staffing across various surgical specialties, fostering a collaborative environment, mentoring team members (especially new graduates), managing administrative tasks, and building strong relationships with surgeons and hospital staff to support high-quality surgical care at Hudson Regional Hospital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling & Staffing Coordination:
  • Develop, manage, optimize, and publish PA schedules across surgical departments within Hudson Regional Hospital, ensuring appropriate coverage for diverse surgical specialties and fluctuating caseloads.
  • Coordinate responses to urgent scheduling needs, sick calls, and time-off requests for the PA team.
  • Proactively identify potential staffing gaps and collaborate with leadership to find solutions within the hospital.
  • Utilize scheduling software and tools efficiently.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, operational guidance, and mentorship to the surgical PA team at Hudson Regional Hospital.
  • Lead the onboarding, orientation, and training process for new hire PAs, with a specific focus on guiding new graduates in navigating the operating room environment and surgical protocols.
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and collaborative team culture focused on clinical excellence and professional growth.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and facilitate communication within the PA group.
  • Participate in performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and identify development opportunities for team members.
  • Administrative Management:
  • Oversee daily administrative tasks related to the PA team, including accurate timekeeping verification for payroll processing.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment lifecycle: screening applications, conducting interviews, and coordinating the hiring process for new surgical PAs for the hospital.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and protocols specific to Hudson Regional Hospital.
  • Manage team resources effectively and contribute to budget planning discussions as needed.
  • Collaboration & Relationship Building:
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the surgical PA team, surgeons across various specialties, nursing leadership, OR staff, and hospital administration within Hudson Regional Hospital.
  • Proactively build and maintain strong, positive working relationships with physicians, ensuring PA roles are well-integrated and valued within the surgical teams.
  • Facilitate clear communication and effective collaboration to ensure seamless perioperative patient care.
  • Address and help resolve conflicts or operational issues involving the PA team within the hospital context.
  • Clinical Support & Education:
  • Maintain clinical competency and may provide direct surgical assistance as needed to support the team, cover critical gaps, or maintain skills (specify expected percentage if applicable, e.g., <20%).
  • Identify educational needs within the team and facilitate or coordinate continuing education and skill development opportunities.
  • Act as a clinical resource and role model for best practices in surgical assistance.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Licensure & Certification:
  • Current and unrestricted Physician Assistant license issued by the State of New Jersey.
  • Current NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) certification.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certifications.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of six (6) years of direct clinical experience as a Physician Assistant working in a surgical setting (Operating Room).
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity (e.g., Team Lead, Charge PA, informal leadership roles with mentorship/scheduling responsibilities) within a hospital or surgery center setting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience across varied surgical specialties (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopedics, Spine, Bariatrics, Robotics, etc.) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with PA scheduling preferred.
  • Experience mentoring or precepting junior PAs or students is a significant asset
  • Skills:
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team of clinical professionals. Ability to effectively mentor and educate staff, especially new graduates.
  • Administrative: Strong organizational skills with proficiency in scheduling, payroll/timekeeping processes, and general administrative tasks. Experience with recruitment and onboarding preferred.
  • Communication: Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including physicians, staff, and administrators.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to build rapport, foster positive working relationships, and work collaboratively within a hospital setting.
  • Clinical Acumen: Strong foundation in surgical principles, procedures, and OR protocols.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent critical thinking, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Technology: Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and scheduling software. Competency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Adaptability: Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing demands, and work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $141,756.00 – $200,000.00 per year
