Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery | Night Shift
About the Role
This full-time Registered Nurse opportunity is based within a high-volume Labor and Delivery service line at a large, well-established health system in Raleigh, North Carolina. This night shift role supports both routine and high-risk obstetric patients and plays a critical role in safe deliveries, emergent interventions, and maternal stabilization.
This position qualifies for a competitive incentive package that includes a commitment incentive or tuition loan forgiveness, relocation assistance, and referral incentives. Strong evening, night, and weekend shift differentials significantly enhance total compensation.
About the Unit
This Labor and Delivery unit provides comprehensive care across labor, delivery, operative obstetrics, and immediate postpartum recovery in a modern, well-equipped environment. The unit includes a dedicated obstetric emergency area, multiple labor rooms, operating rooms, and post-anesthesia recovery bays.
Nurses work closely with obstetric hospitalists, private practice OB/GYNs, certified nurse midwives, surgical technologists, nursing assistants, and anesthesia teams to support vaginal and cesarean deliveries. The patient population includes high-risk antepartum and postpartum cases requiring rapid assessment and intervention.
Nurse-to-patient ratios are maintained at approximately 1:1 to 1:2, depending on acuity, allowing for focused, patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care and Patient Safety
- Provide safe, high-quality labor and delivery nursing care using the nursing process
- Support vaginal and cesarean deliveries, including emergent obstetric procedures
- Monitor maternal and fetal status and respond rapidly to changes in condition
- Perform bedside point-of-care testing and assist with operative workflows
Care Coordination and Evaluation
- Identify expected maternal and fetal outcomes and contribute to plan of care development
- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary care teams to ensure continuity of care
- Anticipate postpartum and discharge needs for patients and families
Professional Development and Leadership
- Participate in ongoing education and obstetric competency validation
- Contribute to unit goals, quality initiatives, and performance improvement activities
- Provide feedback to peers and support a collaborative, safety-focused culture
- Promote a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients and staff
Assessment and Planning
- Conduct comprehensive assessments addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs
- Synthesize assessment data to prioritize care and guide interventions
- Support patient and family education throughout the birth experience
Evidence-Based Practice
- Review current obstetric literature and evidence-based guidelines
- Share insights and participate in discussions to advance maternal and newborn care
Qualifications
Required
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Active North Carolina RN license
- BLS, ACLS, and NRP certifications
- Minimum of one year experience as a licensed RN
Preferred
- Labor and delivery or women’s health experience
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and emergency response skills
Schedule and Compensation
- Full-time, onsite role
- Night shift schedule
- 12-hour shifts
- 36 hours per week
- Hourly pay range: $33.88 to $47.91, based on experience and internal equity
- Strong evening, night, and weekend shift differentials apply
