Position Summary

Work schedule and shifts: Primarily outpatient clinic at main Barnes, Ambulatory Cancer Center. May sometimes need to cover and see patients at Barnes West County (outpatient), Barnes Main Campus (inpatient) or Missouri Baptist (inpatient). Will have a set schedule weekly, 4/10s or 5/8s, and this would be up for discussion. Clinic overview: Outpatient clinics consists of patients being seen for initial surgical evaluation, established patients surveillance, and post operative follow up. Primarily working in tandem with surgeon in the surgeon’s clinic in addition to residents. May be expected to play a key role in educating residents and students. Clinic size ranges from 15-20 patients in a block clinic time which is a 4 hour period. Some surgeons have all day clinics and some have just half day. Majority of patients have a cancer diagnosis but all serve patients who have benign hepatobiliary conditions. Team structure and interactions: The provider team consists of 5 surgeons and 4 APPs including this open position. Free communication between the APPs and Surgeons via InBasket Messaging, email, and phone calls. The culture of the team is very much a team environment with great support from the Surgeons in education and onboarding of their team. Surgeons encourage personal development and the team to take initiative on projects to move the section forward for patients. Day-in-the-life snapshot: While in clinic, APP would evaluate New Patients by taking history, examination, and educating patient about diagnosis and briefly discuss surgical plan. Will give synopsis to the Attending Surgeon, who would then see the patient independently. Will also see established and post operative patients, and help develop an assessment and plan based on imaging and patient presentation. Regarding administrative work outside of clinic, you would be responsible for clinic prep for upcoming clinics, addressing patient clinical calls and staff InBasket Messages, communicating with referring providers, and other providers from patients care team. Order imaging, documentation in patients chart, multidisciplinary conference, share pathology and other results with patients, communicate with home healthcare providers, and assist with enzyme assistance program. If cross covering with APP team, there will be additional inpatient responsibilities. Continuing Education: Section of HPB will cover the expense of 1 National Educational Conference a year.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs physical assessments/examinations.
  • Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
  • Monitors patient’s adherence to protocols.
  • Coordinates screening for research studies.
  • Collects and records data per research requirements and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements adherence plans used with protocols.
  • Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
  • Interprets diagnostic tests results for deviations from normal.
  • Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram and laboratory test.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care and infection management.
  • Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objective, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Master’s degree – Physician Assistant Studies

Certifications:

Salary Range

$86,300.00 – $155,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
