Job Summary:
WashU Medicine is actively recruiting dedicated and skilled Advanced Practice Practitioners (NP (ACNP) & PA) and New Graduate ACNPs and PAs to manage complex cardiac conditions within dynamic healthcare teams in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Additional experience working with central lines/arterial lines and/or cardiology experience coupled with critical care experience is a plus.
This 12-bed unit manages the care of patients experiencing cardiogenic shock requiring invasive monitoring and or cardiac assist devices. Most common heart conditions seen in our unit include Myocardial Infarctions, Cardiomyopathy, Congestive Heart Failure and Congenital anomalies that result in a failing heart. The APP will monitor, diagnose, and treat our critical care patients utilizing the full spectrum of tests and procedures. Patient cases range from complex valve disease, cardiac transplantation, cardiogenic shock, acute myocardial infarction, high-risk pulmonary embolism, post-cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac tamponade, LVAD complications, and other complex cardiac conditions.
Job Details:
- Full-time (average 40 hours per week)
- (3) 12-13 hour shifts per week on average, consisting of up to 50% nights, weekends, holidays, and paid call
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview, and examination.
- Orders and interprets the full spectrum of diagnostic tests and procedures, including x-ray, electrocardiogram, hemodynamic monitoring, and laboratory tests.
- Performs critical care ultrasound.
- Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options, and community resources.
- Formulates differential diagnoses and diagnoses.
- Plans, implements, and directs treatment and management of patients with acute, critical, and/or complex conditions and evaluates outcomes of care.
- Documents patient history, physical examination, assessment, and plans of care in patient medical record.
- Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or provides referral to other healthcare providers or community resources.
- Performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations.
- Performs invasive procedures commonly utilized in the critical care setting.
- Bills for professional services as permitted by collaborative practice agreement.
- Supports 24/7 staffing model, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Schedules staff in various critical care settings, including telemedicine.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.
- Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs as well as safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Participates in emergency and critical care situations, providing rapid assessment, stabilization, and initiation of treatment for the acutely ill or injured patients.
- Regularly participates in quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care. Serves as clinical expert and leadership consultant to nursing.
Qualifications
Required:
Education:
- M.S.N. – Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner
- M.S. – Master of Science – Physician Assistant Studies
Certifications:
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) – American Nurses Credentialing Center
- Or recent completion/anticipated completion of accredited ACNP program
- Physician Assistant – Missouri Division of Professional Registration
- Or ability to obtain within 3 months of date of hire
- Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) – Missouri Division of Professional Registration or ability to successfully obtain APRN licensure within 3 months of hire.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association
- Z – Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association
