Job Summary

The Section of General Surgery and the Division of Acute Care Surgery (ACS) at Michigan Medicine is seeking a qualified Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our team. The PAs and NPs support the faculty and resident ACS teams to provide patient care for adult trauma and general surgery patients, and adult and pediatric burn patients. This is a great opportunity for motivated professionals to provide patient care through diagnosis and treatment of surgical patients across a broad spectrum within Michigan Medicine.

Responsibilities*

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) will participate in all aspects of inpatient care for patients admitted to the Acute Care Surgery and Burn services. They will also participate in outpatient clinic follow-up of burn patients after discharge. This position will also offer the opportunity to collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and residents in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives. These job duties may be modified depending on the needs of the Section of General Surgery and the Division of Acute Care Surgery.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Inpatient rounding and order entry
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Coordinate consultation with consulting teams
  • Maintain complete documentation of patient care
  • Serve as first contact for patient care, respond to questions from nursing and other healthcare professionals via EMR secure chat, page, and phone
  • Lead daily multidisciplinary rounds with case managers, pharmacists, social workers, and others
  • Ambulatory clinic follow-up of burn patients
  • Order and prescribe medications in accordance with statutes, rules and regulations of the State of Michigan
  • Delayed primary wound closure
  • Negative pressure wound VAC management
  • Wound/ostomy care
  • Maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of nasogastric tubes, chest tubes and surgical drains
  • Educate and counsel patient and family members on disease pathophysiology, management, and trajectory
  • Manage peri-procedural risk assessments and medication management recommendations for all procedures and surgeries
  • Participate in educational activities of the Acute Care Surgery service

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (PA):

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan

Required Qualifications (NP):

  • Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.

Required Qualifications for both PA and NP candidates:

  • BLS certification
  • NPI registration
  • Current DEA registration
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance license

NOTE: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Desired Qualifications*

  • One (1) year clinical experience in an inpatient setting as an APP
  • Clinical experience with management of surgical patients as an APP
  • Experience with emergency room or urgent care setting as an APP
  • Clinical experience with burn care as an APP
  • Familiarity and competence with electronic medical records systems
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment

Work Schedule

Hours: 24 hrs per week Shifts: APPs are scheduled in support of a 24/7 staffing model. Upon successful completion of the training and orientation period, the schedule will include mainly night and weekend shifts.

  • There will be shift premium for evening and weekend shifts

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
