This position is located at the MGH Waltham location. 5-8hr shifts, M-F, 7a-3p At our day surgery center at Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center Waltham we are expanding our activities in robotic surgery across multiple specialties. We are inviting an experienced and self-motivated PA to join our team full-time as the inaugural surgical APP at our center. The primary responsibility in this position will include surgical first-assistance in robotic surgical cases and some non-robotic ambulatory surgery cases. This APP will see the patient through all phases of care, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative discharge. A competitive candidate will have at least 2 years of operating room experience. Prior robotic surgery experience is required. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Primary management of adult day surgical patients in the operating room in conjunction with surgical faculty and staff. Day-to-day duties will focus on directly assisting in multispecialty robotic surgery as the first-assistant, with some non-robotic case coverage as needed. Operational
- History and Physical, image review, preoperative huddling, patient positioning, prepping and draping.
- Make incisions, robotic port placement, retraction, suction/irrigation, specimen handling, surgical decision-making, suturing deep and superficial tissue layers, dressing placement, drain management.
- Patient transport, postoperative orders, discharge care.
Administrative & Educational
- Trains bedside personnel including residents, APPs, students
- Organizes robotic training and competency maintenance for all OR staff including but not limited to RNs, STs, equipment technicians.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program and Masters degrees required.
- 2 years of surgical experience desirable (General Surgery & GYN experienced preferred).
- 1 year of robotic surgical experience required.
- Must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or AANPCB prior to start date.
- Must be licensed by the State of Massachusetts prior to start date.
- Maintain certification by completing required 100 hours of Continuing Medical Education credits every two years.
- Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association.
- Eligible for state and federally controlled substances registration.
- Excellent teamwork/people skills when dealing with patients and/or colleagues.
- Success in this role is contingent upon the presence of or immediate ability to acquire advanced surgical skills.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
- This position reports directly to the Robotic Surgery APP Manager at MGH & Nursing Director at Waltham.
WORKING CONDITIONS The work may require the lifting of heavy objects and patients, as well as exposure to potentially infective material. Work requires contact with needles and other sharp instruments, electric-cautery devices, monitoring devices, and other state-of-the-art equipment. Prolonged standing can be expected. Walking to and from the patient care units can be expected. Hazards present from exposure to combustible anesthetic or disinfecting agents are minimized when safety precautions are strictly adhered.
Job Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. - Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
- Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
- Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
