Full Job Description
Assists gastroenterologists with inpatient and emergency room consultations as well as outpatient office visits and procedures.
Description:
- Performs outpatient office visits to include new patients, routine follow up and acute care.Order and interpret lab and radiology results and formulate a medical plan of care according to protocols. Daily medical management of inpatients in collaboration with physician.
- Rounds on hospitalized patients
- Performs admission history and physicals
- Performs discharge planning functions, family case conferences and dictates discharge summaries
- Perform pre-procedural evaluation, and answer questions pertaining to GI procedures such as bowel preparation, anti- coagulation therapy and dietary recommendations.
- Coordinate patient care and follow-up for gastroenterology patients on the gastroenterology service
- Coordinate with procedure areas to ensure proper equipment and supplies are available for procedural cases
- Sees and evaluate new patients and completes history and physical exams and consultations in collaboration with physician
- Presents patient to physician and assists in formulating a treatment plan, ordering appropriate lab and radiographic studies.
- Evaluate post-procedural patients and routine follow up visits
- See same day patients when required
- Triage new and existing patients over the phone
- Return patient phone calls
- Handle prescription refills
- Review ancillary reports with the physicians
- Provide appropriate patient education
- Review gastroenterology related studies with patients and physicians to formulate a treatment plan
- Review diagnostic imaging with physician to formulate a treatment plan
- Coordinate procedural scheduling to ensure maximum efficiency in physician’s schedule
- Performs other functions as required.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a program for physician assistants or nurse practitioner approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) of the American Medical Association
- Baccalaureate degree or two (2) years working experience as a Certified Physician Assistant or nurse practitioner
- One to three years’ experience in gastroenterology preferred
