The Neurosurgery PA will participate inpatient care as part of the inpatient Neurosurgery team for the Department of Neurosurgery at South Shore Hospital. All patient responsibilities as outlined above are expected and may also include:

  • Rounding with the neurosurgical team (Attending physicians and PAs)
  • Performing inpatient and emergency room consultation and follow-up
  • Collecting clinical data for studies and performing procedures that may include, but are not limited to:

o Staple/suture removal/placement o Wound care/packing o Lumbar drain placement/removal o Lumbar punctures o NGT placement o Central line placement o Arterial line placement o Spine braces/cervical collar placement and removal o Draping and patient positioning.

  • The PA will serve as first-call for ED and inpatient consultations, appropriately triaging and calling the neurosurgeon on-call as appropriate.
  • The PA may serve as OR first assist with neurosurgeon.
  • While the PA can expect a relatively predictable work schedule planned in advance whenever possible, scheduling variations may occur in order to cover clinical needs as they become apparent to the department/clinic. The PA may be asked to pick up additional shifts during the week or weekend, work variable hours, including covering a night shift as available , and/or provide backup coverage as needed.
  • Maintains ACLS certification.
  • The PA I shall be capable of independently orienting, onboarding, and/or training new hire PAs within the department/division.
  • The PA I shall be actively involved in ongoing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Job Summary

Summary The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. Essential Functions Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting. Performs complete histories and physical examinations. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries. Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population. Qualifications

Education Master’s Degree Physician Assistant required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Physician Assistant [State License] required Experience Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
