Full Job Description

We are seeking a Physician Assistant to work collaboratively with a team of Cardiologists, Advanced Practice Providers, nurses, pharmacists, radiology techs, and fellows to provide comprehensive care to cardiovascular patients. The Physician Assistant will work on the Progressive Cardiac Care Unit, in the Cardiovascular Interventional Lab (CVIL) and in the Outpatient Clinical setting at Johns Hopkins Hospital under the clinical supervision of the Director of Electrophysiology, with administrative oversight by the Assistant Administrator, Clinical Operations.

The Physician Assistant is a partner with the EP faculty charged with the overall care of arrhythmia patients at Johns Hopkins. The PA will function in the role of a clinical partner with the EP attending of the week and other EP faculty. It is expected that the Physician Assistant will become an expert in the field of Arrhythmia Management. Skills, which will be mastered, include device interrogation as well as the interpretation of ECGs and arrhythmic monitoring devices. Opportunities for professional development including the IBHRE examination will be made available. Passage of the IBHRE examination is preferred, but not required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Practice within the guidelines of the unit department and institution and in accordance with the PA- Physician Written Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland. The Physician Assistant will be granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually.
  • Obtain history and perform physical examinations on newly admitted and pre-procedural patients.
  • Write orders for medications including pre- and post-procedure orders, obtain informed consent for procedures, complete discharge summaries, interrogate and program implantable pacemakers and defibrillators, triage patient phone calls, and other treatments as necessary.
  • Provide comprehensive, age appropriate and episodic care to patients as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team.
  • There may be an opportunity for the PA to assist in CVIL/procedure area.
  • Participate in daily rounds to report progress of specific patients and help to develop care plans.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care.
  • Assist in the care of patients in the outpatient clinical setting. This will involve assisting attending Electrophysiologists as well as having independent patient follow-up clinics.
  • Work collaboratively with case managers, nursing staff and attending physicians to assist in the care of patients who may require urgent follow up post discharge.
  • Participate as a teacher and as a learner in educational activities in the PCCU, CVIL and Outpatient clinical setting.
  • Establish priorities in patient’s care and management.
  • Record patient visit/interaction in concise, clear and timely manner in the electronic patient records.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and departmental needs.
  • Adhere to departmental, organizational, State, and Federal policy, rules, and regulations.
  • Communicate with health care team members to assure patient and organizational needs are met. Supervises activities of team members as appropriate. Participates in the evaluation process.
  • Act as an educational and clinical resource to patients and families.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
  • Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members.
  • Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long- and short- term management of acute and chronic health.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the team to enhance collaboration and problem solving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to provide information to families and members of the health care team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program.
  • Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • One year of clinical experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of clinical experience preferred.
  • IBHRE certification is desirable but not required.
