Full Job Description

Position Summary/ Department Summary:

This Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will work in the Emergency Department on the Boston BCH Main Campus.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and manage patients at all acuity levels with medical and/or surgical complaints.
  • Work in collaboration with board certified pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians, PEM fellows, PAs and NPs, emergency medicine and pediatrics residents, and medical students.
  • Perform detailed histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and develop and execute a wide range of care plans using sound clinical reasoning and critical thinking.
  • Engage in consultations with subspecialty services to aid in patient care.
  • Perform emergency medicine procedures (including but not limited to laceration repairs, incision and drainage, lumbar punctures, joint reductions, splinting, arthrocentesis, removal of nasal/ear foreign bodies, local nerve anesthesia and blocks).
  • Develop discharge care plans with patients and families including prescribing medications and confirming primary care or specialty care follow-up. Work to promote and encourage optimal and realistic patient goals.
  • Communicate with patients and families in a respectful manner leading to compassionate and empathetic care. Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health issues.
  • Assist in the education of medical and physician assistant students rotating in the department.
  • For NPs only:
    • Providing individualized care for patients boarding behavioral health emergencies for up to 12 patients.
    • Attending morning rounds with the ED Psychiatry team and the charge nurse to review and coordinate plans
    • Supporting the nursing staff and the Behavioral Response Team in treating ED patients with acute agitation and unsafe behaviors using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological de-escalation techniques
  • 34.5 hours per week, shifts are rotating Monday through Sunday and include days/evenings/overnights/weekends/holidays. For PAs: will also be responsible for on-call coverage. For NPs: will also be responsible for behavioral health boarder coverage

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • A Master of Physician Assistant Studies or Master of Science in Nursing

Experience:

  • 1 year of RN experience required (For NPs)
  • ED and/or pediatric NP experience preferred
  • ED and/or pediatric PA experience preferred

Licensure/ Certifications:

  • A current license in the state of Massachusetts to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (PNP or FNP) or Physician Assistant
  • MCSR and DEA upon hire

The posted pay range is Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
