Position Summary

The Physician Assistant/NP provides comprehensive care to patients with musculoskeletal conditions under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon. This includes performing assessments, diagnosing injuries, assisting in surgical and non-surgical procedures, managing post-operative care, and providing patient education and follow-up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care:
    • Conduct comprehensive orthopedic evaluations, including patient histories and physical examinations.
    • Order, interpret, and review diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans for acute and chronic orthopedic conditions.
    • Perform joint injections, aspirations, casting, splinting, and wound care.
    • Provide pre- and post-operative patient management and education.
    • Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as needed.
  • Surgical Assistance:
    • Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room (e.g., positioning, suturing, tissue handling).
    • Prepare surgical instruments, implants, and equipment.
    • Perform first assist duties during orthopedic procedures.
  • Administrative and Coordination Duties:
    • Document patient encounters accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
    • Coordinate patient care with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Participate in rounds, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Contribute to clinical research and continuing education activities, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Licensure: Current state PA license; NCCPA certification required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum [1–3] years of orthopedic or surgical experience preferred.
    • New graduates with orthopedic rotations will be considered.
  • Certifications: BLS and ACLS required; ATLS preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and orthopedic procedures.
    • Excellent clinical judgment and diagnostic skills.
    • Ability to perform in fast-paced surgical and clinical environments.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Proficient in EMR systems and medical documentation.

Work Environment

  • Hospital inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and operating rooms.
  • May require on-call duties, evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on practice needs.
  • Physical requirements include standing for extended periods and assisting with patient positioning or transfers.
